The NAACP, ACLU, National Women's Law Center, and 30 other organizations are calling on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to submit to congressional oversight of the military's top promotions.

In a Sept. 16 letter, the groups cited reporting that Hegseth has intervened to block promotions for at least 40 senior officers, roughly half of whom were women or people of color. The share of women nominated for high-ranking promotions is now at its lowest level in more than two decades.

The letter also names two officers passed over at the highest ranks: Adm. Sara Joyner and Rear Adm. Stephen D. Barnett. Both received exemplary recommendations, and both had actively recruited women and people of color, respectively.

Hegseth's predecessors largely stayed out of the promotions process. He has ignored Democrats' requests to explain his role. A Pentagon spokeswoman called the allegation that his decisions are based on race and s*x "a lie."

The NAACP recognizes the compounded challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people of color, and as elections edge closer and closer, it’s imperative that we vote for policies that protect the dignity, safety, and protection of black transgender and nonbinary students.

These conversations do not need to be rooted in hate and fear-mongering. We should be able to disagree about policy while still protecting the humanity and dignity of every young person involved, for all of our children deserve spaces where they can experience connection, and belonging.

We are still beaming from from our annual State Conference Convention in Portland this past weekend. It is not lost on us what a privilege it is to be able to be able gather all of our committee members spanning across 3 states in one place.

To every commitee member who traveled, showed up, and poured your energy into this weekend, “thank you” doesn’t even begin to express our gratitude, and it was an honor to bare witness to your brilliance. To our speakers who challenged and inspired us, staff who kept the show running, and our sponsors who made it all possible, we deeply appreciate your hard work and your continued investment in keeping our vision for a better future alive.

This work only moves forward because of people like you. Here’s to carrying the momentum from Portland into the year ahead. 🖤💛
