Salem, Massachusetts gets all of the attention leading up to Halloween, but did you know New Hampshire's Salem has a historical connection to the Massachusetts town that includes America's Stonehenge?
Peter Pattee, whose descendants lived on the property now known as America's Stonehenge, arrived in the American colonies in the late 1600s. After traveling around the colonies, he eventually settled in the coastal town of Salem, Massachusetts in 1675.
Peter later moved inland to the frontier village of Haverhill, Massachusetts, where he took up work as a cobbler, operated a ferry across the Merrimack River, and even served as the town constable. Peter's eldest son, Richard, and his grandson, Seth, purchased land on the outskirts of town. One parcel purchased by Seth in 1734 was located near the far northern boundary of Haverhill's colonial claims. This property included part of the yet unknown ancient site.
In 1741, the border between the colonies of Massachusetts and New Hampshire was established, and many Haverhill residents found themselves on the New Hampshire side of that border. With their ties to Haverhill cut, new towns needed to be formed. Several Pattees were among the founding members of a new town in New Hampshire. Many residents, like the Pattee family, could trace their lineage in America to Salem, Massachusetts. To honor their families' legacy in the colonies, the town's founding members chose the name Salem.
This decision has caused many tourists to find themselves in the entirely wrong state while looking for spooky Halloween activities. If you find yourself in Salem, New Hampshire (whether on purpose or by accident), you can stop in to America's stonehenge and view artifacts from this founding family and explore New England's early colonial history.
