San Antonio Firefighters Honor Guard

Our Honor Guard members and Pipe & Drum musicians work these hours at fire stations around the city and very often put in additional volunteer hours each week in service to our fallen uniformed brothers & sisters and our community.

Why is the flag at half-staff right now?

Public Law 107-51 directs that “each year American flags on all Federal office buildings will be lowered to half-staff in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, Maryland.” Unlike other occasions listed in the US Flag Code, 107-51 does not specify a date but rather links the direction to an event (the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial Weekend) whose calendar dates may shift slightly from year-to-year. Beginning in 2023, the Memorial Weekend was moved from October to the first full weekend in May. This year’s observance will occur on Sunday, May 3rd. In keeping with the spirit of the resolution detailed in 107-51, the San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Association will be lowering their flags for the full memorial weekend.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation invites your Honor Guard Unit or Pipe Band to participate during the Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend on May 2 – 3, 2026, in Emmitsburg, Maryland. On this special weekend, a grateful nation will honor the brave men and women who died in the line of duty during 2025 and those who died in previous years.

We will be raising money for our brothers and sisters in the Pipe & Drum Brigade. 4" tall St. Patrick's Day decals will be available for $3 each starting Wednesday, February 25th at the Union Hall while supplies last!

We are proud to honor our veteran and non-veteran firefighters at the time of their Final Alarm. While our own team age averages closer to 50, we too need the support of San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Professional Fire Fighters Association members to keep the mission active. The average age of an honor guard member in the United States is 77 years old—and many honor guards proudly serve alongside members in their 80s and even 90s.

These men and women have already given so much in service to our country… and yet, they continue to stand at attention—ensuring every veteran receives the final honors they have earned.

But today, a national crisis is quietly unfolding.

Across the country, honor guards are facing a growing shortage. Many of these dedicated volunteers are becoming ill, slowing down, or passing away. And while younger veterans are stepping forward to take their place, there simply aren’t enough to meet the rising need.

Every day, more families are requesting military honors. Every day, honor guards are doing everything they can to keep up.

We cannot let this tradition fade.

Operation Honor Guard is working to:
• Recruit and support the next generation of honor guard members
• Provide uniforms, rifles, flags, and training
• Ensure every veteran receives a dignified farewell
