Putting patriotism before politics and focusing on our future. My mom took a job as a state employee to help make ends meet. I mostly washed dishes at first.

Like many American families, my family started out in a small town and through hard work and sacrifice we were able to fight our way into the middle class. We trace our roots back to the late 1800’s around Alpine, Texas, the town where I was born and raised. There my parents owned a small family restaurant which was where I began to learn the value of a hard day’s work. My dad was a proud WWII vet

Massive Fire Engulfs Historic Buildings in Downtown Alpine, Texas 05/27/2024

A fire destroyed important businesses & historic bldgs in the core downtown area of Alpine yesterday. Still shocked & saddened this morning as I view the pictures & videos of the damage, but thankful that there was no loss of life.

Am keeping the business owners, artists, & others who lost so much in my prayers. Grateful to the firefighters & law enforcement who kept the fire from spreading.

Massive Fire Engulfs Historic Buildings in Downtown Alpine, Texas ALPINE, TX – A devastating fire broke out in downtown Alpine today, causing significant damage to several historic buildings and local businesses. The fire, which started in the early evening, quickly spread through structures on Holland Avenue, including Eva’s Salon and Catchlight Gallery.

As the day ends, I cannot close the day without a special thanks to the Alpine Fire Department, the Fort Davis Fire Department, the fire departments from Marathon and Marfa, & crews from the Texas A&M Forest Service for their help battling a fire in downtown Alpine Texas. I also want to thank all our local law enforcement officers, including Sheriff Ronny Dodson for their help as well.

Those of us born & raised in Alpine or who grew up there are inexplicably tied to the land & to the place. Historic buildings hold a special place in our hearts & in our minds. Today, we lost one of the most historic structures in downtown Alpine - a building that dated back to the early 1900’s & held memories for a lot of us; a place many of my generation bought our first pair of pants or shoes, or our first socks or shirts.

That building that was once Forchheimer’s Department Store now served as home to several businesses, including Ivey’s Emporium owned by Bill C. Ivey & Mi Tesoro Jewelry owned by David Busey & Susana Busey. My heart & my prayers go out to them & to the owners of the other businesses on what I know must be a devastating loss.

Years ago, as a key member of the Appropriations Committee in the Legislature, I required the Forest Service to open an office in Fort Davis, Alpine, Marfa, or Fort Stockton. I knew even then that our volunteer fire departments were getting smaller & working with fewer & fewer volunteers while our grass fires seemed to be getting bigger and bigger. Little did I know what a big difference the Forest Service presence would make for our entire region.

State agencies don’t always work in tandem with local communities - but tonight we saw what happens when a state agency partners with local volunteers to help a community help itself.

Downtown Alpine has played a role in many Alpine stories. With work & prayer, we’ll rebuild & continue to thrive. And, that our businesses, though damaged & scarred, will come back stronger & better than ever. Travesty brings out the best in us — & whilen we wake up tomorrow, we’ll figure out how to turn today’s tragedy into tomorrow’s triumph.

Lastly, thanks to the many people who sent me pictures or links, & otherwise helped me stay in the loop on what was happening. Here’s one of the pictures I received.

Today is . If you think about it, we are directly impacted by agriculture every single day. And, agriculture only gets more important each passing year.

I was raised by parents who were passionate about , grew up in an area dominated by the agricultural sector of the economy, represented agricultural districts for 24 years, and had the opportunity to serve in the Agriculture Committees in both the Texas and US Houses of Representatives. I’m hoping I passed on a love of agriculture to my son.

To learn more about the importance of agriculture, you can find this year’s report in Feeding the Economy below.

Nicolás introduced me to “rolled” ice cream last night. Had never seen it, heard of it, or tasted it — but it was delicious!

So, this morning, my coach, María Elena, made me walk a few miles to work the ice cream calories off. It was time well spent; we solved all the world’s challenges while on our walk!

Only about 3% of our nation serves in the Armed Services, yet our country wouldn’t be what we’ve been without our men & women who have served. On this chilly , please take a moment to thank every veteran you see. And, remember to thank their families, too.
