There is nothing more powerful than parents who show up — not just for their own children, but for an entire school community.

I was so honored to join in celebrating Julie Wood and Rachel Lawson as District B Volunteers of the Year. Through their leadership with the Hearst Elementary PTA and Foundation, they have created opportunities, built community, and helped ensure that every student has the chance to thrive.

As a school board member, I see firsthand how critical parent volunteers are to the strength of our schools. And as a mom who has volunteered at my own children’s schools for many years, I know the time, care, and heart that goes into this work.

Julie and Rachel represent the very best of what it means to be part of a public school community — generous, committed, and deeply invested in our kids.

We are so grateful for you, and for all the families who step up every day to make our schools stronger.

I’m incredibly proud to celebrate DePortola Middle School and Pershing Middle School in District B for being recognized as California Distinguished Schools this year!

This honor reflects the dedication of our incredible educators, school leaders, staff, students, and families who work together every day to create learning environments where young people can thrive. From strong academics to supportive school communities, these campuses show what’s possible when we invest in our students and believe in their potential.

District B is fortunate to have schools like these leading the way. I’m grateful to everyone who makes these communities so special — and who continues to lift up our students to reach their full potential.

Congratulations, and !

There’s nothing quite like the joy of reading with our youngest learners.

I loved spending time with the amazing Transitional Kindergarten students at Horton Elementary during their Read Across America celebration. Watching their curiosity, imagination, and excitement as we turned each page together was a beautiful reminder of why early literacy matters so much.

Books open minds. They spark creativity, build confidence, and help children discover the world around them. When students learn to read, they gain the tools to access information, think critically, and pursue the dreams they’re just beginning to imagine.

I’m proud that our students’ achievement in English Language Arts has been improving in recent years, and I remain deeply committed to making sure every child has the strong foundation in reading they deserve. Because when we invest in early literacy, we invest in a lifetime of opportunity.

Thank you to the incredible TK educators who nurture a love of learning every single day.

🌮🍊 Fresh food, bright smiles, and a great day at Horton Elementary!

I had the joy of visiting students at Horton while San Diego Unified’s electric food truck rolled onto campus serving up scratch-cooked tacos, fresh produce from local farms, and this month’s Harvest of the Month: kumquats!

It was so much fun seeing students try fresh foods and learn about where their meals come from. Even better — the food truck itself is fully electric and travels to schools across our district, bringing nutritious meals directly to students in a sustainable way.

Thanks to the free breakfast and lunch program, every student at every school can enjoy healthy, delicious meals made with locally sourced ingredients — helping them stay energized, focused, and ready to learn.

When we invest in nourishing our students’ bodies, we support their ability to thrive in the classroom and beyond. I’m proud of the work our district is doing to make sure every child has access to fresh, nutritious food every day!

Tonight’s community budget workshop reminded me why listening matters.

I’m so grateful to the parents, educators, and support staff from across San Diego who took the time to join us and share their experiences in our schools. Hearing directly from our community — what’s working, what isn’t, and what feels non-negotiable for our students — is essential as we work to develop a student-centered budget.

Your insights help guide where we invest, where we improve, and how we ensure every student in San Diego Unified has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, spoke up, and helped shape the conversation!

Happy International Women’s Day

Today, and every day, I’m inspired by the brilliance, courage, and boundless possibility of girls and women in our schools and across our community.

As a School Board member, I see firsthand what happens when we invest in environments where every girl is encouraged to lead, to question, to create, and to imagine a future without limits. When we open doors for girls, they don’t just walk through them — they widen the path for everyone who follows.

International Women’s Day is a reminder of the world we’re building together:
✨ A world where every girl has access to an excellent education
✨ A world where women’s voices shape our policies, our communities, and our future
✨ A world rooted in peace, prosperity, and equality
✨ A world where potential is not predetermined, but nurtured

I believe deeply in the promise of every student — especially our girls — who deserve the chance to grow into the leaders, innovators, and changemakers they are meant to be. When we champion them, we move closer to a future designed with fairness, dignity, and opportunity for all.

Here’s to the women who paved the way, the girls rising today, and the future we’re creating together!

Women’s History Month is a time to honor the extraordinary — and too often underrecognized — contributions women have made to our communities, our country, and our world.

I was proud to introduce a Women’s History Month resolution at this week’s meeting to celebrate that legacy and the women who continue to shape our future.

As a mom — and the fourth generation of community-minded women leaders in my family to graduate from San Diego Unified — I feel a deep responsibility to ensure every girl in our schools has the opportunities, support, and encouragement to pursue her dreams and lead a life she’s designed.

When we celebrate women’s history, we’re not only honoring the past — we’re investing in a future where every young woman knows her voice matters, her leadership is needed, and her potential is limitless.

Today I officially filed to run for re-election to the San Diego Unified School Board to continue serving the students, families, and educators of District B. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and energized by what’s possible when we come together to support our kids and schools!

I remain deeply committed to ensuring every child has the opportunities, support, and joyful learning experiences they need to reach their full potential. There is so much important work ahead, and I’m excited to keep going — together.
