A change to California’s mandatory Notary certificate wording for acknowledgments, jurats and proofs of ex*****on takes effect January 1, 2015.
Starting 2015 all Notary certificates must include the following notification in order to be compliance with state law:
“A Notary Public or other officer completing this certificate verifies only the identity of the individual who signed the document to which this certificate is attached, and not the truthfulness, accuracy, or validity of that document."

ACCEPTABLE IDENTIFICATIONS

When appearing before a Notary Public, identity must be proven to the notary. Acceptable forms of identification are listed in California Civil Code section 1185. Most commonly used forms of identification are driver license and passport issued within the last 5 years. Social security cards, student identification, consular identification cards, visas and voter registration cards, to name a few, are not acceptable forms of identification and cannot be used for notarial purposes.
