It sounds crazy, and I never would’ve believed it at the time, but it’s true.
One of the best things that ever happened to me was being left out.

All those tears over not being invited, taught me empathy. All those feelings of loneliness and insecurity showed me what it feels like to be left on the outside of the circle, and it feels like crap. But I never would’ve realized it if it hadn’t happened to me personally.

I include other people because I haven’t always been included.

I notice other people because I haven’t always been noticed.

I encourage other people because I haven’t always been encouraged.

I try my hardest to love other people as they are because I haven’t always been loved as I am.

I’m loyal. I’m understanding. I do my best to be honest. I forgive. I try to fix things when I mess up. I show up.

I’m not perfect. I’m not even close, but oh my word, nobody can ever say that I didn’t try with everything I have.

I’m good to my friends, and I genuinely think it’s all because I know what it’s like to be left out.

We always have the opportunity to let hard stuff harden us. We always have the opportunity to let pain keep us from growing. We always have the opportunity to let the wrong people lead us down the wrong path. We always have the opportunity to use hurt as an excuse to hurt others.

That’s one opportunity I hope we let walk right past and on down the street without us even blinking an eyelid.

But what I do hope we learn, and I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I hope we learn to be the kind of friend we wish someone had been to us. We can change things, but we’ve gotta step it up, and we’ve gotta change us first.

09/29/2024… This is 13 Years of Sobriety…We all have scars; both inside and out. Use your experience to support those who are going down the same road of destruction you once went down. Know that your past is worth more than the pain you once carried, because it can now be used to comfort and give strength to another soul who is suffering. Cherish your trials and tribulations as gifts; embrace these opportunities to share the grace you have been given.
