Temenos Catholic Worker is a not-for-profit ministry providing support to homeless youth in San Fran "Polk Street, San Francisco.

Kids from all over run away and find themselves here. Many end up supporting themselves through s*x work of one kind or another. Most are without homes, or live in precarious circumstances. Their world is often violent and often unpredictable. Most end up shooting up drugs to kill the pain of life on the street, and even more, the pain that got them here." Speak With the Earth and It Will Teach You is a book speaking to the theological wonder of God's book of nature, traversing rivers and mountains, studying clouds and trees.

It is a book that brings awareness to the greediness of humanity, leading to the destruction of our natural habitat which brings on our droughts, floods, and eventually destroying earth.

This book offers a beauty of nature that draws us into God's wonder, a wonder that has no judgment, and in the words of Second-century Rabbi Tarfon, "It is not up to you to finish the work of perfecting the world but neither are you free to avoid it!"

Our real work is to work towards "perfection of the world," or in the words of Jesus, "the Kingdom of God!" The earth is in our hands, let us be about enjoying our nature and protecting it! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

As we look ahead this week to what I always think of as the 'Autumn Triduum' of All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day, I am reminded how intimately we are connected to our beloved dead and all who have gone before us in faith and love.

Dorothy Day is my favorite example of the communion of saints in practice as a member of Christ's Mystical Body. Dorothy understood herself as a part of a community that reaches back through the generations and extends into the future.

For Dorothy, the communion of saints extended far beyond those included in the Roman Church's official list.

The communion of saints embraces the poor and forgotten, like those I have spent over thirty years hanging out with; the saints embrace the immigrants who faced a potentially lethal environment, cartel violence, corrupt officials, and governments on an obstacle course of death along the border; the border holds many such stories of border 'Saints", who, in death and life, suffered at the intersection of worlds. The saints embrace those who have lived and died in obscurity serving their brothers and sisters.

The saints embrace Martin Luther King, Jr. and those who are not Christian such as Gandhi, for saints do not have to be of any one faith.

Today I remember four saints who have gone before me, Vicki Yeley, my closest friend; my parents, Wade and Virgil Smith, and my son Zach; I remember my living saints, who support me and our ministry financially, and with their love.

The saints are far from perfect, they were and are holy. There is a difference. There are many paths to holiness, yet they wind down to one single path--that of love, a love that transforms all differences into one of caring for another. As Dorothy once said, "I try" when told she was not a good Christian. So let's keep on 'trying'!

A great cloud of witnesses testifies to the glories that come to those who persevere. So let us walk our sacred path with confident trust that the God who created and redeemed us is longing for us to arrive at the mansion that has been prepared for us since the beginning of time. Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

Healing Blind Bartimaeus NET VERSION

46 They came to Jericho. As Jesus[a] and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus the son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to shout,[b] “Jesus, Son of David,[c] have mercy[d] on me!” 48 Many scolded[e] him to get him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So[f] they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up! He is calling you.” 50 He threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus. 51 Then[g] Jesus said to him,[h] “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Rabbi,[i] let me see again.”[j] 52 Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he regained[k] his sight and followed him on the road.

---------------------------------------------------------

"I would say that there exists a thousand unbreakable links, between each of us and everything else, and that our dignity and chances are one. The farest star and the mud over our feet are a family, and there is no dignity or sense in honoring one thing, or a few things and then closing the list. The pine tree, the leopard, the Platte River, and ourselves--we are at risk together, or we are on our way to a sustainable world together. We are each other's destiny(Mary Oliver)!

----------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------

The healing of Bartimaeus is an act of faith. The faith that Jesus is talking about means trusting God will do what is best--which may not be what you or I want. True faith includes praying that God's will be done.

The secret of Jesus' success as a healer, is he trusted God without hesitation. He could then confidently challenge others to trust God too.

Bernard of Clarvaiuy remarked:

"Loving ourselves for the sake of God is the highest degree of truth."

Bernard was saying that we love ourselves as we love God, for we are made in God's image; we have God's spark within us. As we move away from God, we are unable to embrace the fullness of God in our lives, caused by sin.

The more we love ourselves as God loves us

the more we can put others first, and have the courage to face the reality of our world.

Through the years, my years in the closet, being kicked out on the street, being a pr******te, and having my son die, coming near death, and in the past five years being beaten up, having surgery, not able to walk for three months, and being ill have taught me the importance of not judging or condemning. I have learned the importance of not judging my past or condemning it, and of looking at people with immense compassion and love in the way Jesus looked at Bartimeus. In so doing, he discovered his goodness and found his sight.

This week a friend, who is from Gaza, called, crying, scared to death, her son's legs and arms were amputated resulting from wounds, with no anesthetic. He is 14 years old; such pain, such horror. Trusting Jesus in faith, working with a young person accused of murder, and listening to people on Polk, as I make a pastoral round. I hold the words of Martin Luther in my heart:

"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, today I would still plant my apple tree (Martin Luther).

Jesus is Real, his memory is alive, and by loving ourselves the spark of God will be kindled more and more within us where as we see the inhumanity of man, and focus only on the healing of Jesus in our lives and their lives.

Gregory of Nyssa tells us this is not an easy journey in his words: The knowledge of God is a mountain steep indeed and difficult to climb! Trusting that Faith. This is a hard thing one can do but we find true meaning and life!

This election season Trust the Faith! Find the spark of God shining brightly enabling us to not judge, and loving everyone! Candidates come and go, but God remains--Trust the Faith! Deo Gratis! Thanks be to God!

A Book Review and Reflection!

"But God said to him: "You fool this very night your life will be demanded. of you.. . . So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God. .(Luke 12:20-21)."

=======================================================================_-=e In the American Prophet, Peter accepts a calling from God that takes him on a spiritual journey through a divided nation. A dream revealing a Presidential election's outcome is the first in a series of prophecies, including a school shooting, a natural disaster, and a pandemic. As Peter attempts to shine a light on the issues around his dreams, his popularity, followers, and those who want him dead, grow. When a radio host stirs up conspiracies about him, Peter takes to the open road in a wild, cross-country escapade. Through it all, he strives to remain true to his gift, while attempting to obey the impossible command to love his enemies, even his chief critic, the President.

This story reminds us that when one walks the least-followed path, one will always face the possibility of rejection and possibly death.

Last night, as I walked in the cold air, on one corner after another on Polk, people were panhandling. They were bundled in dirty, torn coats, their faces with glazed-over eyes. People walk by going to a bar or a fine-dining restaurant without seeing and erasing their existence.

It is much easier to live in ignorance of what is destroying us than to face it, The root of inhumanity is the lack of love.

I am reminded of the words of Gustavo Guitearrez, "If there is no friendship with the poor, and no sharing of the life of the poor, there is no significance to liberation because liberation exists among equals."

James Baldwin wrote some sixty years ago in Nothing Personal about the unspeakable loneliness that we feel when we wonder if anyone can feel what we feel and are angry about what we are angry about.

There is an unspeakable loneliness among the homeless, the undocumented immigrants here, and those on the border. I feel at times an unspeakable loneliness coming from living close to rock bottom and staying there. The difference is I made the choice, and am committed to that choice==I have always had an option, where most do not!

The government leaves me and my buddies on the street with an unspeakable loneliness resulting from their not recognizing their pain, and feelings of desperation. I was asked recently how many I am helping to vote, and I rolled my eyes, for no one I talk to on the streets sees any use, it does them no good.

My suggestion is that as you walk the streets shopping and talking with friends, you start making a few new friends, speaking and talkingwith our homeless friends; walk with them as an equal, see our undocumented residents, and those on the border simply as people needing us to walk opportunity.

I have been asked if I ever get burned out on the seeming lack of response, (LOL) and remind them I am like Don Quieto who chased the "tilting windmills" following Jesus into Galilee! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

"Sloughing Towards Galilee!

"Christian/Catholic Worker Going to Bad!"

"Hitting Rock Bottom and Staying There!

"Jesus called them and said to them. . .Instead whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:42-45) NET Version.

============================

Chaos reigns in the world; it reigns in the Middle East, with death, pain, and destruction; chaos reigns in the United States over our political divisions, even fear of civil war.

Crime and drug use is rampant. But many of us do not resort to drugs, at least not of the street kind. One of our drugs is "doing", and in this scenario we are on our metaphorical bikes, pedaling as fast as we can away from the chaos. We are certain that with enough action--pushing homeless people off the street, forcing the homeless into drug treatment and places they do not want to live, and electing the "correct candidate" and staying within our tribes we will "win". To "win", means that others must lose. The homeless are already losing; people in need of food, and health care are losing; We are leaving many, many people behind in our attempt to "win."

What is the difference between me and the saints? I am always fighting to raise myself.

They make rock bottom the defining moment of their lives. We must live in a way that we are always at rock bottom, discovering our helplessness and crying like a needy child, letting God's Infinite mercy and love enter our lives. We must follow God in having mercy and love for all without expecting anything in return.

AnaBaptist Catholic Worker Michael Spong once said:

"Even if it turns slowly it is still a revolution!"

Jesus compared the Reign of God to a mustard seed, and Martin Luther King Jr. commented, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

I see ministry simply as a part of the "revolution" turning slowly and listening to the words of Elizabeth Gilbert to be dedicated to my path and never judge myself. I am planting "mustard seed".

Last night (Saturday) I spent an hour talking to Francis in our photo. He talked of being afraid, with the recent City efforts, to clean "us" off the street; of having difficulty walking, and his desire simply to have a place to camp, and food provided.

I am a "Story catcher" and listener.

trying to "walk a mile" in his shoes finding rather than force and judgment Francis needs someone to listen and walk with him in his boots. You would be surprised to find out how much easier it is to catch stories. And much easier hitting rock bottom, and being one with all people!

And so join me in continueing this journey of being a "slow" revolutionary following the words of Jesus:

Matthew 25:31-46

The Judgment

31 “When[a] the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All[b] the nations will be assembled before him, and he will separate people one from another like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He[c] will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him,[d] ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When[e] did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or naked and clothe you? 39 When[f] did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the king will answer them,[g] ‘I tell you the truth,[h] just as you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters[i] of mine, you did it for me.’

41 “Then he will say[j] to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire that has been prepared for the devil and his angels! 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink. 43 I was a stranger and you did not receive me as a guest, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they too will answer,[k] ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not give you whatever you needed?’ 45 Then he will answer them,[l] ‘I tell you the truth,[m] just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’ 46 And these will depart into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”[n]

"Sloughing Towards Galilee!"

"Christian/Catholic Worker Gone Bad!"

"Sent to Ease the Burdens!"

Luke 10:1-9 (The Net Version)

1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him two by two into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest. 3Go! I am sending you out like lambs surrounded by wolves. 4Do not carry a money bag, a traveler’s bag, or sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5Whenever you enter a house, first say, ‘May peace be on this house!’ 6And if a peace-loving person is there, your peace will remain on him, but if not, it will return to you. 7Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they give you, for the worker deserves his pay. Do not move around from house to house. 8Whenever you enter a town and the people welcome you, eat what is set before you. 9Heal the sick in that town and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come upon you!’

---------------------------------------------------

Several nights ago, I received a text asking me to bring food, socks, and clothes. Three young men were outside! So I gathered what they asked for and a blanket. Outside, they were standing in the late-night cold, shivering, so we went across the street and bought them donuts and coffee.

One, whom I had never met, blurted out with tears in his eyes: "Do you mean you are doing something nice for each one of us and expect nothing in return?"

His fearful response reminds me of what the seventy-two must have encountered along the way. People needed time to be listened to, and talk, to trust good news. He needed time to let go of his fear I might be some "john" or someone who wanted to hurt him, pretending to be good.

The 40-Day Prayer Fast for a Fair and Just Election calls us to witness good even when darkness, war, poverty, and promises are not kept, and injustices appear in Lamb's clothing! The ". Forty Day Fast" calls each of us into a time of reflecting on our purpose in this election. Is it a selfish purpose? or are we building up castles of thoughts in our minds of what might happen if so and so is elected? One gentleman who is Caucasian and a Muslim shared with me recently, "Father, I am afraid to go to Mosque, and to even mention I am voting the Green Ticket, I was beaten up for both the other night!" This is one example of a man being harmed because of how he is going to vote and his religion! I lost a good friend several years ago because he saw me talking to a Republican!

Or are we called to ease the burdens of the weary, regardless of party or affiliation, or homeless, living in blankets on the street, or in jail? I have not heard one candidate mention "homelessness" so far, so or we going to act?

We are sent among children of despair because of abuse or neglect, youth who have grown deaf to good news.

Luke's good news of Jesus built a community of believers from those huddled against loss and unkindness, and the reality of division because of poverty.

Jesus whispers in our ears to live in love, to kindle the Divine Spark, and let it flame in love and Luke still shows us the beauty of God's Reign on earth. I am a Story-Catcher, catching the stories of anyone in need, or simply wanting to talk. Being a Story-Catcher I have learned, many times the hard way, that each of us is broken, and needs a hand to get through life!

The truth is whatever the election outcome, know this: The arduous work of peace will not be a goal of either party. It's up to us!

In the weeks to come Jesus whispers in our ears to live in love-- and Luke still shows us the beauty of God's sovereignty on earth! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!
