Domestic Violence Awareness Month | Healing. Accountability. Community.

Building a safer community means supporting survivors, connecting individuals and families with resources, and promoting accountability and lasting change.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Santa Cruz County Probation Department recognizes the vital work of local community partners who support survivors, help individuals navigate recovery, and promote healthier relationships.

Survivors can access advocacy, safety planning, emotional support, and resources to help rebuild their lives. Individuals seeking to change harmful behaviors can also connect with services that encourage accountability, healthier relationships, and lasting behavioral change.

Breaking cycles of violence takes time, commitment, and collaboration. By supporting survivors, encouraging meaningful change, and strengthening partnerships, we can help create safer environments where individuals and families have the opportunity to heal and thrive.

From meeting community members and answering questions to sharing a few laughs along the way, our Probation team loved being out in the community all week long.
The fair gave us the opportunity to connect with the people we serve, build relationships, and show that Probation is about more than what happens inside a courtroom.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, said hello, and spent a little time with us!

One week. Thousands of community connections. And plenty of fair memories.

Celebrating Leadership & Community Service!

We are proud to celebrate Chief Probation Officer Sandra Mendez as she begins a new chapter of service with the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary Club!

Yesterday, after 10 years of dedicated Rotary membership in Madera, Chief Mendez was officially inducted into the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary. This created a new opportunity to build relationships, strengthen community partnerships, and connect with others who share a commitment to service.

The principles of Rotary’s Four-Way Test provide a meaningful foundation for this work:

• Is it the truth?

• Is it fair to all concerned?

• Will it build goodwill and better
friendships?

• Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

By embracing these principles, Chief Mendez embodies the spirit of “Service Above Self.”

Her commitment to service extends beyond her role as Chief Probation Officer, as she continues to foster meaningful partnerships, strengthen community connections, and contribute to the well-being of Santa Cruz County.

Thank you, Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary, for welcoming Chief Mendez!

Employee Spotlight: Officer Jose Rocha

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re spotlighting Officer Rocha, a Probation Officer who has spent his career working with youth in our community.

Raised in Watsonville, Officer Rocha grew up in a farmworking family and spent his summers working in the fields from sunrise to sunset. Those experiences shaped his work ethic and remain an important part of his story.

Officer Rocha has been a Probation Officer since 2016 and has worked with juveniles throughout his career. He chose this path because he wanted to be a role model for young people—many of whom come from backgrounds similar to his own.

In addition to his work as a Probation Officer, Officer Rocha serves as a Field Supervision Officer (FSO) and Taser Instructor. He also supports the Aztecas Soccer Program, helping serve more than 200 youth through the Aztecas Summer Camp.

Thank you, Officer Rocha, for the work you do and the example you set for the youth we serve. 👏

Honored to receive Monarch Services’ Partner of the Year Award. Recognition belongs entirely to our Santa Cruz County Probation team.

Our officers, analysts, fiscal staff, and support staff show up every single day with compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to supporting individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. Our probation officer’s work goes far beyond case management, it’s about creating real change, fostering accountability, and standing alongside survivors with respect, care, and humanity.

Since 2019, under AB372 our department has been proud to be one of only six counties in California piloting the Positive Solutions Program, an individualized model that provides the right dosage of services based on each person’s unique needs. It’s a transformative approach that helps change harmful norms, build emotional awareness, and break cycles of violence at their roots.

We’re grateful for this recognition and deeply appreciative of our partnership with Monarch Services. Let’s continue this important work together for survivors, families, and our community.

Our Juvenile Hall Team is proud to partner with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education to implement PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). Staff continue their training and are excited about the progress, collaboration, and positive impact on youth.

PBIS helps us:
• Promote positive behavior and student engagement
• Support safe, humane, growth-oriented environments
• Reframe rules to highlight desired behaviors
• Build recognition systems that fit facility routines
• Align with existing programs like substance use and cognitive-behavioral treatment

Together, we’re strengthening skills, structure, and support for the youth we serve.
