It Appears We Have Lost the U.S.S. Clamagore (SS-343) to the Scrap Yards
Many of you know of Eternal Reef's 'On Eternal Patrol Memorial Reef Project' where we created the first and only underwater memorial honoring the 65 American submarines and the more than 4000 officers and crew who will remain forever On Eternal Patrol.
For the past 50 years the Clamagore (343), a WWII Balao class submarine has been serving as a museum ship docked at Patriots Point in Charleston S.C. next to the aircraft carrier Yorktown (CV-10) and the U.S.S. Laffy (DD-274), two of the most storied combat ships of WWII.
While the Clamagore never saw combat, she is one of the few WWII class submarines left. They aren't making these boats anymore, and unfortunately, she has been sitting in the water unmaintained to protect her hull from Mother Nature and her corrosive powers.
As an honorary member of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. bubblehead, we worked to try and preserve the U.S.S. Clamagore. We had proposed the Clamagore be taken to Kings Bay Submarine base in St. May's GA. There she could be taken out of the water to be restored and preserved with skilled volunteer labor from active and retired submariners.
Unfortunately, it appears a final decision has been made to scrap her. And it still may cost more to scrap her than it would to preserve her.
It will be sad when this great ship goes down.

HISTORY CORNER: SUBMARINES 12/27/2021

HISTORY CORNER: SUBMARINES It’s hard to believe that King James I of England not only commissioned a team of scholars to create the King James Bible, and also a brilliant Dutch inventor and engineer who would invent the submarine.
