Michiganders across Chippewa County will gather on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 to share their concerns with the county’s Board of Commissioners about the termination of several healthcare workers following a recent contract with MyMichigan Health and War Memorial Hospital, which resulted in the termination of several hospital staff.

Danielle Russo, a certified physician assistant who has practiced medicine in the area for the past 15 years, worries that the lack of healthcare workers will put critical care out of reach for communities.

“I want to emphasize that this is not simply a matter of employment disputes. It is a community healthcare crisis,” Russo said in a statement recently published by EUP Solidarity on Facebook. She adds, “By the end of December, I understand that only one primary care physician will remain within MyMichigan’s Sault Ste. Marie primary care practices, with no remaining independent private practice primary care physicians in the city,”

Community members are encouraged to speak during the public comment period of the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners meeting on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 5:30 p.m. at the County Building of the 91st Courthouse located at 325 Court Street in Sault Ste. Marie.

A peaceful protest will be held outside MyMichigan Medical Center Sault on Friday, Oct. 16, from 4-5:30 p.m. to honor the terminated hospital staff. It will also feature a lineup of local community speakers.
