September is Su***de Awareness Month, and we, at REACT EMS, would like to take a moment to pause and remember our brothers and sisters across the country that have fallen victim to this tragedy.
Every year, between 100-200 first responders die as a result of su***de, with 1,405 first responder su***des reported nationwide since 2018. First responders are at high risk for su***de for multiple reasons. Some of the main reasons are trauma, stigma, and stress.
First responders see hundreds of high-stress traumatic events throughout their careers. There is also a stigma attached to asking for help as many believe that they will be seen as weak. Finally, the stress of long shifts, fatigue, and physical health problems add to daily pressure.
Since our inception in 1996, REACT alone has lost 4 members to su***de. We have also seen su***de losses among other first responder agencies within our county.
The good news is that there is hope and healing for those that may be struggling.
We at REACT EMS have developed a PEER Support team, in conjunction with the Warriors Rest Foundation, to help our employees with their mental and physical well-being. Our peers are trained in recognizing individuals in crisis, critical incident debriefings, and su***de awareness. Our hope is that through these efforts, our employees will have long and happy careers, while caring for the citizens of our community.
During the month of September, please remember the brave individuals who dedicate their lives to keeping us all safe.
