🌋 Did you know you can explore land younger than you at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park?

Eruptions from Kīlauea have repeatedly reshaped the park’s landscape. When lava reaches the ocean and cools, it can harden into brand-new land along the coastline.

That means some of the ground inside the park did not exist within many of our lifetimes. Of course, active volcanic landscapes can be dangerous, so always check current park alerts and respect all closures.

Have you ever seen an active lava flow or a recently formed lava field?

“How many days do I need in this National Park?”

The honest answer: it depends on YOU.

Your available vacation time, budget, interests, fitness level, and must-do activities all affect how long you should stay. A one-day visit still counts, and it is always better than skipping a park because someone told you that you “need” more time.

This guide will help you decide how many days are right for your trip.

🌺 So how do you actually get to American Samoa from the U.S.?

For most travelers coming from the mainland, the route is pretty straightforward:

✈️ Mainland U.S. → Honolulu
✈️ Honolulu → Pago Pago, American Samoa

Getting there takes some planning, but you don't need to make it more complicated than it is.

And once you arrive in Pago Pago, then the real American Samoa adventure begins.

🚨 FAT BEAR BRACKET CHECK!

The 2026 contenders have been announced, which means it's time to make a very serious decision:

WHO ARE YOU PICKING TO WIN FAT BEAR WEEK?

The competition starts tomorrow, and the bears will go head-to-head until only one gloriously chunky champion remains.

But remember, this isn't really about which bear simply looks the biggest.

Age, s*x, life history, fishing ability, access to food, raising cubs and other factors can all affect a bear's ability to put on weight. Fat Bear Week celebrates how successfully these bears have prepared themselves for winter.

🐻 Study the bracket.
🐟 Research your bears.
🗳️ Choose your champion.

Then come back here and tell me:

🌲 When should you visit a National Park?

The most popular month isn’t automatically the best month for your trip.

Before choosing your dates, check these five things:

🌦️ Weather: Look beyond the average temperature. Check precipitation, humidity, wind, elevation changes, and the possibility of extreme conditions.

👥 Crowds: Peak season usually offers better access and more services, but it can also mean packed trails, limited parking, and higher lodging prices.

Check out my crowds vs weather charts here - https://nationalparkobsessed.com/best-national-parks-to-visit-by-month/

🚧 Access and closures: A park may be open even when roads, trails, campgrounds, visitor centers, and other facilities are closed.

🥾 What you want to do: The best time for hiking may not be the best time for waterfalls, wildlife, rafting, wildflowers, or fall colors.

📅 Reservations and availability: Check lodging, campgrounds, permits, tours, timed entry, flights, and rental cars before committing to nonrefundable plans.

Check out which parks require reservations: https://nationalparkobsessed.com/national-park-reservations/

There is no perfect month for every traveler. Decide which experiences matter most to you, then choose the season that gives you the best chance of enjoying them.

🐻 It's almost the most wonderfully chunky time of the year.

Fat Bear Week starts September 22!

Every year, the brown bears of Katmai National Park & Preserve spend the summer doing something incredibly important: getting FAT.

And in the bear world, fat is something worth celebrating.

These bears spend the summer feasting, especially on salmon, and building the fat reserves they'll depend on during winter hibernation. During hibernation, a bear may lose around one-third of its body weight.

Fat Bear Week turns that incredible transformation into a bracket-style tournament where WE get to vote for the bear that best represents fatness and success.

And yes, I will absolutely be following along. 😂

🐻 Fat Bear Week: September 22–29
🏆 Champion crowned: September 29

Are you already a Fat Bear Week fan, or is this your first year?

🌲 Follow National Park Obsessed this week because there are about to be a LOT of fat bears on your feed.
