We're never more than one election cycle away from an administration that will use technology in ways you didn't expect..
This meme says it all.
Flock cameras and other license plate systems do help police after a crime. Stolen cars get recovered. Hit-and-run drivers get identified. Detectives get a lead they would not have had otherwise. That part is true.
The other part is also true. A camera on every pole that logs every plate, every trip to church, every visit to a clinic, every drive past a gun shop is Big Brother.
Free people should not want that much of their life sitting in a searchable government file.
Cell phones already do a version of the same thing. So do Ring cameras pointed at the sidewalk when you walk down the street. I have a problem with all of it. I also understand why people feel safer with them.
That said, the warning hits home.
Not long ago the government treated churchgoers like criminals.
On Easter Sunday 2020, Kentucky State Police recorded the license plates of worshipers at Maryville Baptist Church and left 14-day quarantine notices on their windshields.
Governor Beshear had ordered police to record the plates of anyone attending a service. Some parishioners covered their plates. Troopers took VIN numbers instead.
Liquor stores were essential. Big box stores were essential. Houses of worship were wrapped in police tape and marked closed by government order.
If Flock cameras had been live in 2020, they would not have been a neutral crime tool. They would have been a lockdown enforcement tool. Every plate in a church lot on Sunday morning. Every family that took a walk when the governor said stay home. Every pastor who refused to lock the doors.
The same officials who now say only criminals fear the cameras were ready, not long ago, to treat worship itself as a crime.
The machine does not stay pointed at the thief. It stays pointed at whoever the government has decided is the problem that week.
If your town had Flock cameras in March 2020 do you think they would have been used to enforce the lockdown?
