Wow was it HOT out there today. Congrats to the Spartans for bringing home the win.
Unfortunately, several students (at least 6 that I know of, but possibly more) were overcame by the heat and had to go to the hospital. This is never a situation I like to see—either as a board member or a parent. My own kid was out on that field today as well since he plays the tenor drums in the band. My kid is fine, but a lot of kids had some very scary experiences. It’s hard to see and witness.
A lot of things were done to try and make this game as safe as possible-the start time was moved up, there was extra water and ice, water timeouts, kids went into the shade if they could, a running clock in the 4th. I know the wet bulb indicator was being closely monitored as well, at one point there was a delay because the wet bulb indicator was too high. If you aren’t familiar with the wet bulb indicator, it’s a strict guideline in place by IHSA. There was a wet bulb indicator on the field being checked regularly. In every instance I saw where someone needed assistance, district officials were quick to respond and help students and I’m thankful for that. I’m also thankful for the medics who were definitely working overtime helping these kids out.
Even with all of the safety measures in place, you can never predict when something might happen. My main concern is that the students who weren’t feeling good are okay. Please if one of your students was affected, please reach out to me and let me know that they are okay. Additionally, if you have concerns, you can email me at [email protected] or call or text me at 217-414-4765. I would recommend a text first so I can make sure I’m available if you want to speak over the phone.
