SPRINGFIELD, ILโฆState Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) continues his effort to meet with and learn from employers and community organizations across the 95th District through his โMike on Main Streetโ business tours. Coffeyโs latest visit was with Deputy Chief Scott Day of the Midland Fire Protection District in Kincaid to discuss the challenges facing the department and how the State of Illinois can better support volunteer fire departments.
โDeputy Chief Scott Day is doing a tremendous job leading his team and keeping our community safe,โ said Coffey. โI was impressed by how much they do on their own as a volunteer fire department that operates on a limited budget. Scottโs daughter, Ainsley, along with local students such as Michael Foli, even volunteer their time to help the department with community services.โ
Coffey continued, โThe main concern I heard from Scott and his team was the challenge of receiving adequate funding for new trucks, modern equipment, and maintenance costs. I learned that the newest equipment and gear have significant improvements, but they also come with higher costs, putting additional pressure on the departmentโs budget. I would love to see more funding available for our volunteer fire departments in the next state budget.โ
