Peoria built Caterpillar, and Caterpillar keeps building Peoria. 🚜

It was great to spend time with Caterpillar Chairman & CEO Joe Creed at the Edwards Demonstration & Learning Center. A hundred years after Caterpillar started here, its roots in Central Illinois are still here.

This is about more than machines. It's about jobs that can support a family. Caterpillar employs more than 17,000 Illinoisans and is investing in the next generation through its Illinois workforce initiative. That means training pathways in East Peoria, Mapleton, Morton and across our region, so young people and career-changers can step into manufacturing and technician careers.

And the recent $100 million commitment means more opportunities to make head of household wages for Illinoisans.

One more thing I loved: every one of those machines you see moving earth was run by our skilled union Operating Engineers Local 649.💪🏾 That's Central Illinois talent on display.

When we invest in people, we invest in Peoria. Thank you, Joe and Rob, for your partnership and your belief in this community.

As someone who lost my mom in my 20s and my father in my 30s, I know firsthand how much early detection and modern medicine can change a family's trajectory. Reducing our predisposition to long-term illness isn't a shortcut — it's a gift we didn't always have.

I applaud Governor JB Pritzker for speaking so openly about his journey, and I hope it moves us closer to ensuring this kind of care is accessible to more Americans.

More than two years into his weight loss journey, Gov. JB Pritzker says he wants to talk about it, largely in part because he knows millions of Americans are suffering from obesity-related health conditions.

I am excited to be partnering with Bradley University and President Jimmy Shadid on an important shared goal: growing enrollment and expanding opportunity for students right here in Peoria. 🎓

Bradley is a cornerstone of our community — and when Bradley grows, Illinois grows. Together, we're working to make sure more students see Central Illinois as the place to build their future.

More to come on this partnership soon! ❤️

Why I appreciate unions 🇺🇸

I’ll start:

Weekends off
Paid vacations
The 8-hour workday
Sick leave
Paid family leave
Safer job sites
Fair wages
No child labor
Health care and retirement benefits
A seat at the table for working people

Every one of these was fought for — not given. As someone who’s battled in the legislature working on economic mobility for Peoria and all of Illinois, I know none of it happens without organized labor pushing for it.

This Labor Day, I’m grateful for every union member who built the middle class we’re still trying to protect. 💪🏾
