I love this fun fact: we often hear that racc***s “wash their food,” but they’re actually doing it for sensory reasons, not cleanliness. Their paws are incredibly sensitive, and wetting them helps them better understand what they’re handling.

Here are more fascinating facts about these mischievous masked bandits:
1. In the wild, racc***s typically live only 2–3 years.
2. A single mother can have up to 7 kits at a time.
3. Despite their reputation, racc***s are quite clean and often use a shared latrine area in the wild.
4. They’re omnivores, eating fruits, plants, nuts, berries, insects, rodents, frogs, eggs, and crayfish. In cities, they’re notorious for rummaging through garbage.
5. With five dexterous toes on their front paws—like tiny fingers—they can open jars, turn doorknobs, and manipulate objects with surprising skill.
6. Their hind feet can rotate 180 degrees, allowing them to climb up, down, and even sideways with ease.
7. Racc***s don’t truly hibernate. Instead, they enter a state called torpor: their body temperature drops, insulin spikes lower their blood sugar, and they live off stored fat—often losing up to 50% of their weight by winter’s end.
8. They can sprint at speeds up to 15 miles per hour.
9. They’re strong swimmers, able to stay in water for hours at a time.
10. One raccoon, named Rebecca, was originally meant to be served as a holiday meal for President Calvin Coolidge—but instead became his beloved White House pet.
