At our Centene Nursery, staff and kiddos lovingly refer to a corner of the floor as “Alizée’s Salon.” 💙❤️
Many children who return to the Nursery already know they want to sit in Alizée’s chair. She takes time to talk with parents about their child’s haircare routines, asks kiddos what styles they want, and helps them feel comfortable, included, and cared for throughout the process.
One staff member recently shared this story after watching Alizée braid a little boy’s hair:
“We had a bit of a rough start with the detangling — he even had to give me some of his mommy’s tips to make it hurt less!” Alizée said. “And he coached me through the braiding process letting me know how many braids he wanted on each side... just like his mommy does it.”
“The second he saw himself in the mirror, his whole face just lit up.”
Another staff member shared that afterward, he proudly walked around showing everyone his hair and “looked so proud.”
She also reflected on “the ways that she goes above and beyond to help our children feel safe, honored and beautiful.”
Moments like these are about so much more than hair. They are about trust, confidence, familiarity, dignity, and helping children feel seen and cared for in meaningful ways.
Thank you, Alizée, for the love and intentionality you bring to children every day. ✨

THEN & NOW: Building Stronger Families Through Community Leadership 💙❤️
As we celebrate 40 years of Keeping Kids Safe & Building Strong Families, we’re reflecting on the people and partnerships that have helped shape the Nursery’s growth and deepen our impact over the decades.
Between 1996 and 1998, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery launched both our Advisory Board and Parent Advisory Board, two groups created with a shared belief that strong organizations are built through collaboration, lived experience, and community care.
For nearly three decades, Advisory Board members have helped strengthen the Nursery through leadership, advocacy, professional expertise, fundraising support, and meaningful community connections that continue to expand our reach and sustainability.
At the same time, our Parent Advisory Board created space for parents who have experienced Nursery services firsthand to help guide our work, share insight into the needs of families, support other parents, and ensure our programs remain grounded in compassion, dignity, and real community experience.
Together, these boards reflect something that has always been central to the Nursery’s mission: children and families are strongest when communities come together to listen, support, and lead alongside one another.
Thank you to every past and present member who has helped move this work forward over the last 40 years. 💫
