A message from Chancellor Samuels: “Last week, in my former district, a brave student spoke up at a community meeting to share their perspective and experience. While this student was speaking, a parent in the community interrupted them by making abhorrent and hateful comments.
I want to be crystal clear — the comments made by this parent are reprehensible. Our students and our community deserve better. Even more, our students do not deserve to be spoken to or about in this way.
This type of behavior is not permitted in our classrooms nor in our community meetings, and we expect every interaction in our school community to be respectful and kind. What happened at this meeting was an absolute violation of these very basic expectations and we will pursue avenues to ensure she understands the seriousness of these actions.
As Chancellor, I am personally committed to working closely alongside Superintendent Higgins to repair the deep harm that these words have caused.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has declared a full "old school" snow day for New York City public schools this Monday, February 23, 2026.
There will be no Classes! Unlike the storm in January, there will be no remote or online learning. Schools are completely closed.
This marks the city's first traditional snow day (without a remote learning requirement) since 2019.
Everyone stay safe! The blizzard is expected to hit late Sunday afternoon, bringing 12 to 24 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

In order to protect our most vulnerable New Yorkers, the Office of Emergency Management has opened a number of warming centers around the city in support of DHS’ code blue efforts.
Included in those centers are 10 high schools, two in each Borough. All of these schools were scheduled to be closed on Monday for a Professional Development Day.
These are predominantly high school sites, close to public transportation, accessible, and with a space for people.
The warming centers will all be closed by Monday evening, which will allow ample time for our facilities to thoroughly clean and disinfect the space before Tuesday morning.
Thanks so much for your partnership and feel free to reach out with any comments or concerns.
