Early mornings at 4:00 AM in the dark are just part of the deal when we want to do right by our dogs. We loaded them up and made that 450-mile, 8-hour round trip over two mountain passes just to get our health testing done.

โ€‹It is a long haul, but health testing is important for us because we love this breed so much and want to do our best for them. Always striving to improve is just part of being a better stockman every single day.

โ€‹We finally made it back home where they belong, and you could just see the relief on their faces to be right back out with their animals. Hard days on the road are entirely worth it when it means protecting the future of these incredible working dogs.

Why was May patrolling the pond today?

โ€‹May had the raccoon completely locked down and wouldn't let it out of the pond, Vixen arrived shortly.
The girls work well together ๐Ÿซถ

โ€‹These dogs do not mess around when it comes to keeping predators off the ranch, and honestly, the chickens, guineas, and peafowl are all saying a huge thank you right now.

Busy stretch around the ranch lately getting everything picked up, spreading out the aged compost pile to build up the soil, and laying fresh straw down in the barns and huts before winter settles in. Now we are watching the weather and trying to decide the exact right window to reseed our dry hard clay pastures.

โ€‹When you are working with tough high-altitude ground that has to handle cattle, sheep, and goats without irrigation, plant choice is everything. Here is why we are going with the mix we chose:

โ€‹Meadow and Mountain Brome: Incredible cold tolerance, fast recovery after grazing, and deep roots that break up hard clay.

โ€‹Pubescent and Crested Wheatgrass: Outstanding drought resistance and toughness when the summer gets dry.

โ€‹Ladak Alfalfa and Cicer Milkvetch: Great for fixing natural nitrogen in the soil, helping build organic matter, and giving the livestock a protein boost.

โ€‹Hoping mother nature cooperates with a timely snow or rain to get everything established.

PJ and Onyx don't help much with the actual heavy lifting, but they take their job as backhoe supervisors very seriously. While I was scraping out old wet hay, Pat made a run to town with a load of sheep and came home with a brand new ram. Never a boring day

Woke up to a nice surprise this morning, the first snow has officially touched down on Mount Werner. ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ
โ€‹Standing at 10,568 feet, Mount Werner holds a lot of history for our valley. Originally known as Storm Mountain, it was renamed back in 1965 to honor local Olympic skier Buddy Werner. It's also the birthplace of that lightweight Ch*****ne Powder we all know so well, thanks to the unique way storms roll across the valley.
โ€‹Every year, that first white peak gets everyone talking. Fall was great, but winter is definitely knocking on the door ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

We are so deeply thankful for the trust and friendships built with the families who open their hearts and homes to our dogs.

Bailiffโ€™s owners recently shared a moment with us that brought tears to our eyes. When his old Boston terrier companion passed away after a long life, Bailiff stayed right beside his owners as they laid him to rest, using his nose to gently push dirt into the grave.
โ€‹Moments like this show just how intuitive, tender, and deeply sensitive these working dogs truly are. Caring for these dogs and the people who love them is at the core of everything we do. But our heart doesn't stop at our own line.
We care deeply about the entire Livestock Guardian Dog community. Whether you have one of our dogs or not, we are always here as an honest, open-minded resource and advocate for you and your animals. Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives, through the hard days and the good ones.
