Before the Marble! Many may be familiar with the white marble mansion known as Winfield Hall, Glen Cove, Long Island. NY. But before the marble mansion an earlier Mediterranean style mansion stood on the site. This first house was designed by architect, C. P. H. Gilbert circa 1900 for engineering titan, Alexander C. Humphrey.
He then sells the mansion to Emmett Queen circa 1906. Circa 1914, Queen sells the estate and mansion to Frank W. Woolworth who names the estate. Winfield Hall, Winfield being his middle name. Unfortunately in 1916, the mansion burns to the ground and Woolworth has a new marble palace designed by the architect who designed the first house, C.P.H. Gilbert. Constructed at a rapid pace, but Mr. Woolworth only got to enjoy his princely splendor a few years and unexpectedly died in 1919. More in next posts.
