Most of the public speakers are referring to the establishment of the Onondaga County New American Affairs Council. New Americans need to know they are respected and will be represented as members of this county. They came here for opportunity.

The theme of Hispanic Heritage Month within our community is “Together, we are more.” This is true for our community as a whole and I am happy this council will be created.

Food brings people together, and this is a great example of neighbors helping neighbors.

The New American CNY Blessing Box is holding its 6th Annual Food Distribution on Sunday, November 1, from 1–3 PM at CNY Uniforms Plus, 664 Burnet Ave. This year, they are working to provide food for more than 500 refugee, immigrant, New American, and local families.

With SNAP cuts impacting thousands of New Americans, this kind of community support is more important than ever. They are looking for volunteers, donations, and community support to help make the distribution possible.

If you are able to help, please consider supporting this effort. Below you will find a flyer to spread the word, a pledge form and a volunteer sign up. Every contribution can make a difference for a family in our community.

It is important to help our veterans, and Honor Flight lives up to its name.

This weekend, October 3 & 4 from 9AM to 5PM, there will be a bottle and can recycling day next to the Embassy Suites at Destiny USA. Proceeds will support Honor Flight Syracuse.

Veterans’ support has been important to me for a long time. Back in 2011, when I was an intern at CNYCentral.com, I was #2 on the team that created Operation: Hired, a career fair specifically for veterans. So when I see an opportunity to support veterans in our community, I want to share it.

More details about this weekend are in the post below:

I love seeing stories like this about Syracuse.

The Hawley-Green Grocery was part of the neighborhood for more than 130 years, serving generations of families before sitting empty for 43 years. Now Glenn Hinchey is bringing it back to life, piece by piece.

What I really love about this is that it isn’t just about saving an old building. It’s about preserving a piece of the people and history that made the neighborhood what it is. And then finding an old 1850s well underneath the building? How cool is that?

Syracuse has so much history hiding in plain sight. I’m glad there are people willing to put in the time, money and work to save these pieces of our community and give them another life.

A Syracuse preservationist is restoring a 19th-century grocery store with plans for a community-focused business.
