Honored a FAMU legend through Public Art this morning to a packed room buzzing with excitement and respect! Just in time for FAMU Homecoming 2026, a vibrant new mural celebrates the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Sybil C. Mobley, founding Dean of FAMU’s School of Business and Industry.

Painted by muralist Myah Freeman, the artwork weaves together FAMU’s iconic orange and green, historic imagery of SBI students and the business school, and inspiring words from Dr. Mobley. Made possible through a collaboration between Florida SBDC at Florida A&M University School of Business and Industry and KCCI’s 2026 Community Catalyst team. This project was inspired by KCCI team member Tangela Lofton’s involvement with all of KCCI’s mural projects this year and the powerful murals Tangela and Betsy experienced in South Africa. Dr. Mobley embodies all of KCCI’s core principles. What an honor to be able to create this tribute to an incredible trailblazer, connector and visionary.

During 2027, KCCI’s 20th and final year, we will celebrate the past work of the Community Catalysts and will create “The Catalyst Playbook — A Guide to Citizen-Led Placemaking and Economic Vitality” to enable other communities to replicate KCCI’s successful model, past projects and ideas. KCCI will also develop a guide that neighborhoods and individuals can use to mobilize residents, strengthen their sense of place, and spark economic vitality.

After two decades of bringing people together to transform Tallahassee through creative placemaking, KCCI announced today: Mission Accomplished!

KCCI has created a lift beyond what anyone could have imagined. Since 2007, KCCI and its volunteer Community Catalysts have helped transform Tallahassee through creative placemaking and community collaboration to drive economic impact and improve economic vitality.

40+ major community projects throughout Leon County
300+ volunteer Community Catalysts trained
Nearly $1 BILLION in trackable economic impact

From Gaines Street and the Amphitheatre in Cascades Park to the TLH letters, Midtown, the Market District, Art of the Box and vibrant murals, KCCI’s positive impact can be seen all over Leon County.

What began as an initiative in 2007 by Knight Foundation expected to last a few years ultimately continued for two decades, fueled by results, the leadership of KCCI’s team and volunteer “Community Catalysts,” and financial support from Tallahassee’s local businesses and grant organizations.

We couldn’t have done it without the hundreds of passionate citizens, community partners and local businesses and governmental leaders who believed in making Tallahassee the best version of itself.
Together, we proved that ordinary citizens can shape extraordinary places and projects.

That’s a wrap on KCCI’s 2026 Placemaking Week! ✨

We closed out the week with See & Stroll, a morning walk through Tallahassee highlighting public art, placemaking and the stories behind some of the spaces that help shape our community.

Paint brushes and shovels were out, volunteers were busy, and school spirit was on full display as KCCI, VyStar Credit Union, students and community members teamed up to bring colorful improvements to Cobb Middle School.

Under the leadership of professional muralists Amanda VanStratum, Carlos Morales and Nicole Spina, students and community members brought to life the beautiful mural at the corner of Miccosukee Road & Hillcrest.

Volunteers helped create a 105-foot fence mural to greet the cars arriving on campus. Plus, a new sign and plants transformed the gym entrance.

Landscaping improvements like a succulent garden and new flower beds helped transform everyday spaces around the campus. Cobb holds a special place in KCCI history as the site of Tallahassee’s first Crosswalk to Classrooms project.

The fun continued at R. Frank Nims Middle School, where volunteers helped add new fence art and a permanent school spirit mural to welcome students and brighten the campus.

Thank you to everyone that helped beautify and make a visible difference together.

The Cobb Middle School placemaking enhancements were part of KCCI’s 8th Annual Placemaking Week and the third year KCCI and VyStar Credit Union have partnered through VyStar’s Good is everywhere initiative to create fun, educational and enriching improvements at local schools.

KCCI, Mayor John Dailey, Westminster Oaks residents, and W. T. Moore Elementary School students celebrated the unveiling of “Connected Communities Inspire the Future,” a collaborative public art project bringing together the creativity of W.T. Moore Elementary students and Westminster Oaks resident artists.

Through original artwork, vibrant fence banners, and transformed utility boxes, the project celebrated connection, creativity, and the power of art to bring generations and communities together.
