On this day in 1998, the Port Tampa City Library opened at 4902 W Commerce Street in the renovated First Bank of Port Tampa City Building.
A Passage of the Book ceremony was held during the dedication, in which the Port Tampa Women’s Club book titled “A History of the City of Port Tampa 1888-1961” was passed hand to hand from the old library on Interbay Boulevard to the new one on Commerce Street. Mrs. Ella Bond, the President of the Port Tampa Women’s Club, was the last person to receive the book and she handed it to the librarian of the new library.
