May is National Speech-Language and Hearing month:
This month recognizes that clear communication underpins our daily interactions, professional success, and social relationships. However, effective communication depends on the seamless integration of hearing, speech, and language. National Speech-Language-Hearing Month spotlights this intricate connection and the importance of communication health.
In the U.S., approximately 10% of the adult population experiences some form of communication disability. This includes speech, language, and voice disorders, with a significant portion facing stigma or have minimal support. Furthermore, adults with communication disabilities often have poorer health outcomes and are more likely to experience chronic conditions due to reduced ability to self advocate.
Here at the Bronx VA, our veterans have access to speech-language pathologists who can address their speech, voice, language, cognitive-communicative and swallowing difficulties in acute care, CLC and outpatient settings.
