IT’S NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY!
Did you know Louisiana is home to some pretty incredible public lands? From coastal marshes and wildlife refuges to historic sites and beautiful trails, there are plenty of places to explore, learn, and appreciate right here in our own backyard!
📅 National Public Lands Day is September 26, 2026!
It’s a day to celebrate the public lands we all share—and to give a little something back. National Public Lands Day is also the nation’s largest single-day volunteer effort, bringing people together to care for and enjoy public lands. 🌎💚
🌊 Looking for somewhere to visit in Louisiana? Check out:
🐊 Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge – Located in New Orleans, this refuge protects freshwater, brackish, and estuarine marshes, bayous, lagoons, and forest habitats. Visitors can enjoy birding, photography, fishing, paddling, and the Ridge Trail boardwalk.
🌾 Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge – On the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, this refuge encompasses more than 18,000 acres of marsh, forest, bayous, and pine savannah. It’s a great place for wildlife watching, birding, hiking, paddling, and nature photography.
🦅 And there’s so much more! Louisiana’s public lands provide important habitat for wildlife, protect wetlands and coastal areas, and give us places to experience the natural beauty of our state.
Whether you spend the day exploring a trail, watching birds, visiting a refuge, picking up litter, or simply learning more about Louisiana’s natural resources, there are plenty of ways to celebrate!
