Last night at City Council, I spoke about the fact that addressing homelessness in our community cannot fall on any one organization, our Police Department, or nine members of City Council. It takes all of us working together and, most importantly, communicating and coordinating rather than working in silos.

Today, I had the opportunity to participate in a meeting that reinforced just how much of that collaboration is already happening in Miami County.

Around the table were many of the organizations that have had boots on the ground serving our community for years, along with community partners and county and city officials.

What stood out to me was hearing how often these organizations already work together. When one organization can’t meet a particular need, they know who to call. They share resources, refer people to one another, and do their best to fill the gaps that exist with the resources our community currently has.

There are different perspectives on how we address homelessness, and I don’t expect everyone to agree on every policy or approach. But I do believe there is a lot of common ground in wanting people to have access to help when they need it and making sure the people providing that help are connected to one another.

Last night, I said that I have faith in our nonprofits, county, and city leaders to continue working toward solutions, especially as colder weather approaches. Today’s conversation gave me an even greater appreciation for the work that is already being done behind the scenes every day.

There is always room to improve, build partnerships, and find better solutions. But we also shouldn’t overlook the network of people and organizations that has been doing this work in our community for a long time.

I’m grateful to everyone who came to the table today, shared their experience, listened to one another, and remains willing to work together.

Next Steps on Experiment Farm & State Route 41

Last night, City Council voted to move forward with the roundabout process at the Experiment Farm & State Route 41 intersection. I want to be clear about what that vote actually means and why we're doing this.

▪️This Is Not a Final Decision

Moving forward with the roundabout process does not mean we're building a roundabout. It means we're advancing it to the next phase: a public hearing where the City of Troy will take comments and input. This is the point where your voice matters most, officially and formally.

▪️Additionally, Council requested that no construction begin before 2029, possibly 2030. That gives us time for the public hearing process, community input, planning, and further analysis.

▪️Why I Voted This Way

I asked what started this whole process: Our City Engineer has been receiving complaints about this intersection for years. When she looked at the data, she found something serious: there are an average of 90 accidents (edit from original post) in a 3 year span at this intersection. It's in the top three highest accident intersections in Troy, and in the top 30 in Ohio.

That's a significant safety concern that needs to be addressed.

Beyond the numbers, there's more pedestrian activity in this area now—people living and working nearby, crossing at this intersection. A roundabout is a significant safety upgrade for pedestrians compared to traditional intersections. The kind of severe collision we saw yesterday evening—a van pulling out in front of a semi—is exactly what roundabout design is engineered to prevent.

▪️Three things shaped my decision:

1. Safety Concerns: there is an average of 30 accidents a year. Top 3 in Troy. Years of community complaints. This intersection has a documented safety issue that needs addressing.

2. Long-Term Planning: The study projected Troy's traffic patterns in 2049—20 years out. As we grow (and Miami County is projected to grow), a roundabout is designed to handle that growth while maintaining safety.

3. A Path to a Public Hearing: A major infrastructure proposal opens the door to a formal public hearing process. This is your venue to be heard.

▪️Thinking Beyond This Intersection

During last night's discussion, I asked about analyzing the entire State Route 41 corridor—especially as the northwest & west sides of Troy continues to grow. Engineers confirmed this roundabout is the start, not the end. They're not opposed to expanding this analysis to look at the whole corridor and how growth patterns will affect traffic flow across multiple intersections. That's the kind of long-term corridor planning Troy needs.

▪️The Public Hearing Matters

The City of Troy will hold a public hearing where anyone can comment on this proposal. Your comments will be officially documented and become part of the public record for ODOT.

This doesn't mean Council is undecided about whether we need to act. We have documented safety concerns at this intersection: 90 accidents a year, and it's in the top 3 in Troy. We need to address it. But the public hearing is where the community weighs in on the best solution.

▪️What This Means for You

If you have concerns about the roundabout, this is your moment to be heard formally. If you support it, show up and say so. The public hearing is where it matters.

The process isn't rigged. The decision isn't final. But your input—official input, on the record—can absolutely influence which direction we go.

More details on the public hearing date and location coming soon. I'll make sure you have all the information you need to participate.

▪️Watch Last Night's Meeting

If you want to hear the full discussion—and get answers to questions many of you have already asked—I encourage you to watch the recording of last night's City Council meeting. Several council members asked many of the same questions that came up in your emails and comments. You'll hear directly from the engineers and get a complete picture of the reasoning behind this decision.
