Hardin County EMS relaunches Lifesaving Technology to Hardin County Via PulsePoint, a 9-1-1 Integrated Mobile App

PulsePoint Respond is a real-time view into dispatch, increasing community awareness of emergency events and alerting CPR-trained citizens to cardiac arrest victims nearby.

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY — Today, Hardin County EMS announced the relaunch of PulsePoint to further the agency's commitment to creating a healthy and civically engaged community. PulsePoint is a free-to-download mobile app, which 1) alerts CPR-trained citizens of cardiac events in their vicinity so they may administer aid, 2) helps build a comprehensive Automated External Defibrillator (AED) registry and 3) informs the community of emergency activity in real time.

"Hardin County EMS and Hardin County E-911 are excited to announce the re-launch of the PulsePoint application. Early CPR is proven to save lives of patients in cardiac arrest," said Colonel Mark Peterson, Hardin County EMS Director. "The purpose of this app is to alert CPR trained individuals in our community that someone close to their location is in need of CPR with the hope that CPR will be started early while local emergency responders are responding to the incident, ultimately improving outcomes and saving lives. This a free application for your phone that could potentially save someone's life."

PulsePoint Respond empowers everyday citizens to provide life‐saving assistance to victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). PulsePoint Respond app subscribers who have indicated they are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and willing to assist in case of an emergency can be notified if someone nearby is having a SCA and may require CPR. If the cardiac emergency is in a public place, the location-aware application will alert users in the vicinity of the need for CPR simultaneous with the dispatch of advanced medical care. The application also directs these potential rescuers to the exact location of the closest AED.

Each year, more than 326,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur, making it the leading cause of death in the United States. Delivery of CPR can sustain life until paramedics arrive by maintaining vital blood flow to the heart and brain. Without CPR, brain damage or death can occur in minutes. After 10 minutes there is little chance of successful resuscitation. The American Heart Association estimates that effective bystander CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.
