On Friday morning, June 5th, Law Enforcement Officers from our South Jersey Area ran and carried the Special Olympics torch from Atlantic City to Camden via the White Horse Pike. Our Gloucester Township Police Officers ran an approximately four mile leg of the run. Great work by everyone involved! 🏃‍♂️

🇺🇸 During World War II, the Battle of Normandy, which lasted from June 1944 to August 1944, resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from N**i Germany’s control. Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6, 1944, also known as D-Day, when some 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. The invasion was one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history and required extensive planning. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 Prior to D-Day, the Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign designed to mislead the Germans about the intended invasion target. By late August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and by the following spring the Allies had defeated the Germans. The Normandy landings have been called the beginning of the end of war in Europe. 🇺🇸

🍩Today is more than just a day where cops rejoice and celebrate by eating donuts- it's a day with very interesting history: 🧐🍩

The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of the “Donut Lassies,” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. 🍩

In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. About 250 volunteers traveled overseas and set up small huts near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and, of course, baked goods. 🍩

Despite discovering that serving baked goods would be difficult considering the conditions of the huts and the limited rations, two officers – Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance – began frying donuts in a small pan. These tasty treats boosted morale and won the hearts of many soldiers. 🍩

Nicknamed “Donut Lassies,” the women who served donuts to troops are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States when the troops returned home from war. 🍩

National Donut Day is held annually on the first Friday in June, and The Salvation Army celebrates the work of the original Donut Lassies by delivering donuts to those in need and to donut lovers across the country. 🍩

Camden County Prosecutor's Office of New Jersey Man Charged in Series of Arsons in Gloucester Township and Winslow Township

A Gloucester Township, New Jersey man has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of arsons in Gloucester Township, New Jersey and Winslow Township, including fires at his apartment and workplace, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay, Gloucester Township Police Chief Anthony Minosse, and Winslow Township Police Department (NJ) Chief Donald Lemons.

Taquan N. Ayers, 25, a licensed practical nurse at Oaks Integrated Care, was charged with one count each of 2nd-degree Aggravated Arson and 2nd-degree Causing or Risking Widespread Injury or Damage in Gloucester Township, New Jersey. He was also charged with two counts of 3rd-degree Arson and one count each of 1st-degree Attempted Murder, 1st-degree Kidnapping, 2nd-degree Attempted Aggravated Arson, and 3rd-degree Terroristic Threats in Winslow Township.

On Thursday, June 4, 2026, at approximately 11:52 a.m., officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department and fire personnel responded to the Cherrywood Apartments located at 1200 Little Gloucester Road in reference to a fire at Ayers’ apartment. The fire was extinguished before it could spread to other apartments. No injuries were reported.

During the investigation, detectives obtained surveillance video of a suspect – identified as Ayers – in possession of a gasoline can at the apartment complex shortly before the fire.

At approximately 12:03 p.m., officers from the Winslow Township Police Department (NJ) and fire personnel responded to Oaks Integrated Care located at 128 Berlin-Cross Keys Road in reference to an arson at the facility. Upon arrival, officers encountered a parked vehicle belonging to Ayers that had been set on fire outside of the business. The suspect – identified as Ayers – was taken into custody at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives learned that Ayers had set fire to his vehicle and then entered his workplace with a gasoline can. Once inside, Ayers doused the lobby area in gasoline and attempted to light a fire, but he was unsuccessful. Ayers also made threatening comments toward fellow employees and kept a co-worker confined in a locked office for several minutes. He ultimately went outside and was taken into custody without incident. Numerous employees and patients were inside the facility at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

Ayers will be remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility, pending a detention hearing in Superior Court.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

Gloucester Township Police Media Release- Dwelling Fire in the Clementona Neighborhood Displaces Residents 6-3-2026

On Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at approximately 4:57 PM, the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to the unit block of Belleview Avenue, located in the Clementona neighborhood of Gloucester Township for a dwelling fire with possible entrapment. Officers arrived on location to find smoke and fire coming from the side of the residence and confirmed that the resident was safely evacuated.

Fire suppression efforts were led by Squad 88, a cooperative 24/7 career staffing initiative between Gloucester Township Fire Districts 2 and 4, Pine Hill Fire Department, Chews Landing Fire Department (Station 82), Blackwood Fire Department (Station 84), Erial Fire Department (Station 86), Lambs Terrace Fire Department (Station 85) and Winslow Township Fire Department. Assistance was also provided by Inspira Basic Life Support and the American Red Cross.

There were no injuries as a result of this incident and the resident was displaced due to damage caused by the fire. The fire is being investigated by the Gloucester Township Police Department and the Erial Fire Department Fire Marshals Office.

This is a reminder to check your fire alert and suppression systems to ensure that they are operational. Smoke alarms are a key part of any fire escape plan. When there is smoke, there is fire which can spread quickly. Working smoke alarms give you early warning, so you can get outside quickly.
