Historic Shirley

A privately owned active farm, Shirley is home to the 11th and 12th generations of the Hill Carter family.
(277)

Open to the public on designated dates, Shirley is a testament to Colonial life and early American history. Shirley is more than a historic house with authentic family furnishings! Shirley has original outbuildings with displays and exhibits such as a timeline spanning nearly 400 years of American history, ice harvest display in the original ice pit loft, archaeology panels and new artifact display, slavery and servitude exhibit including a video portion, food preparation display, architecture panels, farm equipment and more. Enjoy the scenic James River from the lawn or take in the expansive view of fields of wheat, corn, cotton, or soybeans.
