Back in 2024, ATU hosted Warning Coordination Meteorologist Dennis Cavanaugh from the National Weather Service in a volunteer education program known as Skywarn! This program teaches multiple volunteers how to spot and report storms before and during formation, so that they can alert the appropriate channels (your local NWS office) and spread the word before disaster potentially strikes. These volunteers are known as Weather/Storm Spotters.
We here in the EMHS department highly recommend programs like these, because we are constantly on the lookout for ways to save lives. The need for help doesn't start when the storm is over, it actually starts before it even begins.

Keep an eye out for any Skywarn programs being hosted around town or near you!

Meet Lucy Grace Reynolds, a sophomore majoring in EMHS at ATU!

Lucy chose Emergency Management after experiencing a flood in 2019 while she was in 5th grade. Seeing firsthand the impact a disaster can have on a community sparked her interest in emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. Since then, she has been motivated to learn how emergencies are managed and how she can help others during difficult situations.

One accomplishment Lucy is especially proud of is joining a volunteer fire department, where she is already gaining valuable experience serving her community.

After graduation, Lucy hopes to work in disaster response, whether through firefighting, the Red Cross, or another emergency management role that allows her to help people when disasters occur.

Outside of school, Lucy enjoys singing, playing the clarinet, spinning her flag in color guard, and volunteering at her local fire department. We're excited to see where her passion for service and emergency management takes her.

The Fall Festival has been a staple of Russellville's Autumn season since 1992, and in 2007 (19 years ago!) EMHS students and faculty hosted booths alongside our local businesses and law enforcement. We hosted CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and IEMSA (International Emergency Management Student Association) booths which educated out community on the importance of emergency management, preparedness, and how they could help the community in their own ways.
We highly recommend getting involved in ones community, so consider this an open invite to this year's Fall Festival in Downtown Russellville on October 31st! (There's a chili cookoff where sometimes our ATU faculty participate! 10/10!)

Meet Eden Lusk, a Senior Emergency Management & Homeland Security student graduating in December!

Eden recently completed a summer internship as an EHS Intern with Conagra Brands, where she supported workplace safety initiatives, preparedness efforts, inspections, and employee safety projects. Through this experience, she discovered a strong interest in Environmental Health & Safety and gained valuable hands-on experience in risk reduction and workplace safety.

Her advice to fellow students: "Take every opportunity you can. Even if it's not exactly what you picture yourself doing, the experience and connections are worth it."

After graduation, Eden plans to continue building her experience in emergency management, safety, and preparedness through her current EHS internship with FläktGroup SEMCO.

This summer, several EMHS students joined Dr. Bethany Swindell in Washington, D.C. for an incredible week at The Washington Center's National Security Seminar.

From daily site visits to engaging discussions with professionals from across the national security field, students had the opportunity to explore careers, build connections, and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges shaping our world today.

Experiences like these remind us that learning doesn't just happen in the classroom—it happens through conversations, networking, and seeing the work firsthand.

This Throwback Thursday we are looking back at one of our program's past graduates, Ramses Sandifer!
Here at ATU, he got his Master of Science in Emergency Management and Homeland Security, and was a NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Athlete with our Wonder Boys. He has gone on to be an emergency specialist and coordinator in various sectors across the country from Mississippi to Texas, but currently he is a Business Resilience Analyst with Bank OZK in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The continued success of all out graduates after their time in our program continues to be a point of pride in our history!
