Men can get breast cancer, too. While breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,670 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and 530 will die. Breast cancer in men is often diagnosed at a later stage, making it harder to treat. That’s why it’s important to share the signs and symptoms of male breast cancer with the men in your life.

Awareness of male breast cancer is important so that more men report abnormalities or symptoms to their doctor early, instead of brushing them off.

Breast cancer patients and survivors often face unique challenges and circumstances that require support and understanding. It’s important to recognize that the breast cancer community needs mental health support while:
- Undergoing treatment
- Adjusting to survivorship
- Navigating a new diagnosis
- Becoming a caregiver to a breast cancer patient

Did you know that many forms of breast cancer show up through subtle changes in the skin or ni**le, and not a noticeable lump?

Check out these 7 warning signs you should never ignore:
- A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area.
- Skin changes like dimpling, puckering, or looking like an "orange peel".
- Ni**le changes, such as pulling inward or shifting direction.
- Unusual discharge that is clear, bloody, or happens without squeezing.
- Redness, flakiness, or scaling around the ni**le area.
- Any sudden change in the size, shape, or symmetry of the breast.
- Persistent pain or tenderness in one specific spot.

Most changes turn out to be completely harmless, but getting them checked gives you peace of mind.

Early detection saves lives. Share this to protect the people you love today.

In Iowa, breast cancer accounts for more new cancer cases among women than any other form of cancer.

Over 3,000 Iowans will receive a new breast cancer diagnosis in 2026. Breast cancer does not just affect older individuals. Research shows that breast cancer is the second most common cancer in young adults between the ages of 20 – 39 years.

Cancer prevention and early detection take teamwork. Doctors, public health programs, families, and community members all play an important role.

We can help improve health by:
- Teaching women why regular cancer screenings and vaccines are important.
- Helping people get care by offering flexible clinic hours, transportation, and appointment reminders.
- Sharing information about programs that provide free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings.
- Supporting efforts that make vaccines and preventive health services easier for all Iowa women to get.

Stay tuned for our next post, which will discuss the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here! Every October, we come together to raise awareness about breast cancer, the most common cancer affecting women across all races and backgrounds. Throughout October, we will be sharing information, resources, and ways you can support those impacted by breast cancer.

Breast cancer has touched the lives of so many of us. Leave a 💗 in the comments to show your support for survivors, fighters, caregivers, and loved ones affected by breast cancer.

This month is about more than pink ribbons. It’s an opportunity to learn about risk factors, prevention, screening, treatment options, and life after cancer. It’s also a time to honor survivors, remember those we’ve lost, support those currently facing a diagnosis, and encourage research that brings us closer to a cure.

Together, we can spread awareness, encourage early detection, and show support for individuals, families, and communities affected by breast cancer.

Radon is a natural radioactive gas that can cause cancer. You can’t see, smell or taste it, but radon may be in your home. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the first leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in smokers.

According to the EPA, the entire state of Iowa is considered at high risk for radon gas in homes.

High levels of radon can be found in any type of home, so it is important for everyone to test their home.

To request your own Radon test kit, follow this link: https://tinyurl.com/54aus778

It encourages residents to test their homes for free and outlines a three-step process if high radon levels are found: retest the home, confirm elevated levels, and potentially receive assistance for radon mitigation funding. Contact information for Louisa County Public Health and a QR code for requesting a free test kit are included.

A healthy home is an important part of protecting your family's health.

Regular testing for radon, lead-based paint, and drinking water contaminants can help identify hidden hazards and reduce exposure to substances that may impact long-term health.
