Press Release:
Sherman, CT: On April 4th at 1:40 AM, the SVFD was dispatched to Terrace Drive for the report of a house full of smoke. The first units to arrive confirmed that all residents had been evacuated from the building and there was a working fire in the basement.
Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire using water from the initial deployment as well as mutual aid apparatus. Water supplies were established on Laurel Drive and Candlewood Lake Road. The fire was declared under control at 2:24 AM.
The members from the Sherman VFD were assisted on scene by firefighters from Gaylordsville Fire Department, Kent Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., and Water Witch Hose Co. #2 of New Milford. Sherman and New Milford Community Ambulance provided an EMS standby crew on scene. Operations were completed with no injuries to any of the responding members at 3:25 AM. The fire remains under investigation by the Sherman Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Sherman Fire Dept and EMS service is made up of dedicated volunteers who train tirelessly to serve the Town of Sherman and standby to help when called. Applications to join the SVFD can be found at shermanvfd.org.

With deepest regret, the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Past Chief Warren Pitcher. Joining the department in 1970, he served as chief from 1979 through 1985. The department is grateful for his years of dedication and the foundation that he helped build which allowed us to grow and provide the services that we do today.

The recent cold temperatures have put a layer of ice on the lake which provided a good environment for some training tonight. Our suits provide us with protection from the frigid water but if you were to fall through you would not have that luxury. Please be careful if you venture out onto the ice.
Did you know that when you call 911 your address is converted into latitude and longitude coordinates? This is known as geocoding. That information is then passed along to the SVFD and is used to pinpoint the location as well as provide details such as the closest water source. Those same coordinates are provided to any mutual aid companies so they can find the best route to the scene.
This address conversion usually works very well and provides us with a precise location. However, from time to time we encounter an address that does not convert properly. This happened most recently with a motor vehicle accident on Route 39 South. The caller identified the address correctly, but the geocode results directed responders to Route 39 North. Fortunately, our members recognized the error because we are familiar with the town roads so there was no delay in responding. If this call required a paramedic or mutual aid companies, then their response may have been delayed by this discrepancy. We have reported the mismatch, but suspect that there are other locations in town which are also incorrect.
What we would like you to do is google your address in town and look at the location that is returned on the map. If everything is fine then there is nothing else you need to do. However, if your location appears to be incorrect, then please send an email to [email protected] with the address. We will take a look at the geocode results and will initiate the steps to get it corrected.
Thank you, and as always, thank you for your support.
