The KU Public Management Center recently hosted Supervisory Leadership Training (SLT) in Olathe, Kansas.

Supervisory training often begins when someone steps into a new role, but the work of leading people continues to change. As responsibilities evolve, workforces shift, and new management research emerges, supervisors benefit from practical opportunities to strengthen their approach.

Over three days, participants focused on skills and strategies they can apply in their day-to-day work to address challenges and bring out the best in their staff. At the close of the course, each participant set a goal for a new skill or practice to implement and received an observational assignment to complete during their regular supervisory work.

What could you or your team gain from the Heartland Certified Public Manager ® (CPM) program? Well, Kaci Preston (City of Pittsburg, Kansas) who is part of our Southeast cohort this year shared that CPM has enabled her to be CREATIVE. One of the core benefits of CPM is Increasing participants' confidence, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness to grow their effectiveness and it makes our hearts grow to see that reflected in participants like Kaci.

This week, a cohort of public sector supervisors started our extended Supervisory Leadership Training (SLT) in City of Coffeyville — and we couldn't be prouder of the work they put in.

Unlike our standard 3-day SLT format, this extended version spreads the training out over four months, meeting one day per month. That extra runway gives participants time to practice new skills in real time between sessions — testing out strategies with their own teams and bringing real challenges back to the group for discussion.

Participants explored topics like leading through change, effective feedback, psychological safety, and coaching and motivation — all grounded in research on what actually keeps public sector teams engaged and employees retained.

The cohort will reconvene for two more in-person sessions and then a virtual wrap-up discussion and report-out this winter, sharing how they've applied what they learned on the job.

Congratulations to our Coffeyville supervisors — we look forward to continuing the work at our next session! 👏
