Great reminder for local families during National Teen Driver Safety Week. Be sure to review Wisconsin's GDL rules with your young drivers to keep everyone safe on the road.

🚘 NATIONAL TEEN DRIVER SAFETY WEEK OCTOBER 18–24 🚘

Learning to drive is a huge milestone, but inexperience makes new drivers particularly vulnerable on the road.

Parents & Teen Drivers — Remember the Wisconsin GDL Rules:
📵 Zero Phone Use: It is illegal for permit and probationary holders to use a phone while driving in WI.
👥 Passenger Limits: Only 1 non-immediate family member passenger is allowed for the first 9 months.
🚫 Absolute Sobriety: Zero tolerance ("Not a Drop") for alcohol under age 21.
🛑 Buckle Up Every Time: Seatbelts save lives.

Talk to your teens today about safe choices behind the wheel!

Key Focus Areas & High-Risk Behaviors

1. Distracted Driving & Cell Phone Use
Wisconsin Law: State law strictly prohibits all cell phone use (handheld or hands-free) for drivers holding an instruction permit or a probationary license, except to call emergency services.

The Risk: Teen drivers are nearly four times more likely than adult drivers to crash while using a phone. In Wisconsin, nearly 50% of high school drivers admit to sending texts or emails while driving.

2. Passenger Restrictions (GDL Rules)
Wisconsin Law: Under Wisconsin's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws, for the first 9 months with a probationary license, teen drivers are restricted to only one non-family passenger under age 21.

The Risk: Peer distraction significantly increases crash risk; the likelihood of a fatal crash increases exponentially with each additional teenage passenger.

3. Zero Tolerance for Alcohol & Impairment
Wisconsin Law: Wisconsin enforces the Absolute Sobriety Law ("Not a Drop" rule) for drivers under 21. Driving with any measurable amount of alcohol in the system results in an immediate license suspension.

4. Nighttime Driving & Seatbelt Compliance
Night Restrictions: Wisconsin GDL limits unsupervised nighttime driving between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM for new probationary license holders. Over 40% of teen traffic fatalities occur during nighttime hours.

Seatbelt Use: Seatbelt non-compliance remains a top factor in fatal teen crashes. Roughly 40% of high school students surveyed in Wisconsin report not consistently wearing seatbelts.

I am honored to have received the 2026 Building Wisconsin Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin.

I had the opportunity to tour their new Center for Apprenticeship Excellence in Madison last month and see their work firsthand. Thank you to ABC Wisconsin for this award and for everything they do to support our state’s construction industry and local workforce.

Great safety reminder from Germantown Police Department. Next time you see flashing lights, be sure to give our local emergency and road crews some extra space.

🚨 MOVE OVER OR SLOW DOWN - IT’S THE LAW IN WISCONSIN

October is National Move Over or Slow Down Month 🚗

Whether our Germantown officers are conducting a traffic stop on I-41, our Germantown Wisconsin Fire Department is tending to an injury crash on a busy street or DPW Village of Germantown, WI - Public Information is clearing a road hazard, stepping out alongside moving traffic is one of the most dangerous parts of the job. When you see flashing lights🚥 on the side of the road:↔️ Move Over: Switch to a non-adjacent lane if it is safe to do so. ⬇️ Slow Down: If you can’t switch lanes safely, significantly reduce your speed. 📱 Put the Phone Away: Handheld phone use is prohibited within 500 feet of emergency scenes. Help us return home to our families at the end of every shift. Protect those who serve Germantown!

Congratulations to Steve Martin from the Germantown School District on being recognized by Next Gen Personal Finance as a Distinguished Educator. Out of thousands of teachers nationwide, he is one of only 95 to achieve this milestone, and the only honoree in Wisconsin.

We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers like Mr. Martin preparing Wisconsin students for success!

🏆 ONE OF A KIND IN WISCONSIN! 🏆

Please join us in congratulating Germantown High School business teacher Mr. Steve Martin, who was recently recognized by Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) as a Distinguished Educator.

This national honor is awarded to teachers who complete six or more NGPF certification courses. Out of thousands of educators nationwide, Mr. Martin is one of only 95 teachers in the entire country to achieve this milestone, and the ONLY honoree in the entire state of Wisconsin.

In addition to this achievement, Mr. Martin recently wrapped up a two-year term serving as an Educational Fellow with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), bringing valuable statewide insights directly back to our classrooms.

Our students are fortunate to have educators like Mr. Martin in our hallways who invest in their own learning to give our students the best possible head start on financial success.

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin’s new Center for Apprenticeship Excellence in Madison.

According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, half a million new construction workers will be needed every year nationwide, just to replace retiring skilled workers. ABC-WI’s new facility will help meet that need by training over 500 apprentices in its eight classrooms and three hands-on labs.
