THANK YOU to everyone who made the 23rd annual Mentor Iowa auction presented by GreenState Credit Union a huge success. Many thanks to all of our sponsors, auction item donors, volunteers, auction committee and in-kind donors who made our event one for the record books for Mentor Iowa. I also want to give a shout out to Sue Hatling (Special Events Coordinator) and Karen Hall (Match Manager) for all of their extra efforts making our event run so smoothly! If you were not in attendance yesterday and won an auction package or two, we will be in touch with you soon to make arrangements so you can enjoy your new treasures!
It was so much fun to honor Joe Nelson with the Tidrick Honors award along with Lauren Baeth & Andy Johnson with the Mentors of the Year award. Pictured are award presentations with Joe & Andy and will add another picture in the future when Lauren's schedule opens up. A big congrats to our Making Matches, Raffle Prize and Heads or Tails contest winners! The live auction packages were fun and congrats to everyone who won these highly sought after items.
We have some exciting news about our "Double Your Dollars" campaign, which we should now call TRIPLE YOUR DOLLARS. During the live program, we had an anonymous donor who agreed to match any funds contributed to make the $5,000 goal. We just checked our "Double Your Dollars" campaign that is sponsored by the Maddox / Powers family and the Principal Charity Classic - Birdies for Charity program. We currently are at $2,850 raised from this campaign. We have kept the "Double Your Dollars" package open until 4/30/2026 on the Mentor Iowa auction portal. Did your favorite online auction item go for more than your budget but still want to make an impact with Mentor Iowa? I am happy to report you can still make a donation to Mentor Iowa by going to: bidpal.net/mentoriowa and sign in. Once you are signed in, go to the Donation tab and it will take you to the Double Your Dollars page. (It is also #10 on the auction item list) If we can raise another $2,150, it will triple to $6,450 with the generosity of the Maddox / Powers family and the anonymous donor. Any additional funds donated will also receive an additional 2% match from Mentor Iowa's account with the Birdies for Charity program. The Birdies for Charity program is in conjunction with the Principal Charity Golf Classic which will be held June 10th - June 14th.

LIVE 2. Old Train Bridge
There’s something deeply compelling about a road not yet traveled — and this striking black and white canvas wrap captures exactly that feeling. Shot in perfect symmetry from the center of an aged iron trestle bridge, the tracks stretch into the distance, flanked by an intricate lattice of steel beams that draw the eye deeper and deeper into the frame. Brooding clouds peek through the ironwork overhead, while trees soften the edges of this industrial scene, creating a hauntingly beautiful contrast between nature and structure. The monochromatic palette gives this 30″ x 45″ large-format piece a timeless, almost cinematic quality in this sophisticated statement piece — equally at home in a modern loft, a rustic farmhouse or a classic study.

LIVE 3. The “Olive” for your Ear
Elevate your style with these stunning 3/4 carat total weight, lab created diamond martini stud earrings. These eco-friendly, 14k white gold settings are set close to the ear for the maximum comfort, sparkling and a secure modern look.

LIVE 4. Blanton’s – Enough Said
Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H, Blanton’s Original Single Barrel was once designated for ambassadors, dignitaries, and Colonel Blanton’s family and friends. Today, everyone has access to the world’s first single barrel bourbon. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon. Blanton’s Original set the standard for single barrel bourbons in 1984. Best served neat or on the rocks. Bottled at 46.5% alcohol by volume. Blanton’s is one of the most sought-after bourbons for its collectible value as well. This bottle features the letter “s” for its topper.
Must be 21 or older to bid on this item.

Good afternoon Mentor Iowa champions!
Hope this post finds you all being able to enjoy this beautiful day. THANK YOU so much to everyone who has made a bid (or two) to win your favorite auction items.
If you have gone on the auction portal, you may have seen some Mentor Iowa champions names listed by certain categories. Although these champions are not physically with us anymore, Mentor Iowa chooses to have their memories last with our program by renaming auction categories in their honor. Mentor Iowa has been very fortunate to have these eight wonderful champions throughout our 52-year history and it is an honor to name the following categories in their names. The following is a brief description of these individuals and the IMPACT they made with Mentor Iowa.
Joe & Janet Brick - For the Family
Joe & Janet Brick were longtime champions for Mentor Iowa and stressed the importance of giving back to their family as well. Joe and Janet were very faithful to Mentor Iowa and generous by being the Dinner Sponsor for our Divots & Dimples golf outing for 16 years. Their love for Mentor Iowa was also shared with their children and employees at Brick Gentry Law. Their children, Stephanie and David, both served 9-year full terms on the board of directors for Mentor Iowa. With Joe’s input, Brick Gentry Law has had a representative on our board for over 30 years. With all of Joe and Janet’s involvement in the community, their biggest passion was family. They loved having the roles as brother/sister, parents & grandparents and helped those they loved make good choices just as a mentor would. It is fitting and an honor to name the For the Family category in Joe and Janet’s names.
Bill Fultz - Art
Bill Fultz was a champion for many years to Mentor Iowa. Bill was an influential Advertising Executive, community leader, award-winning artist and accomplished pilot. For over 15 years, the Mentor Iowa art category had a piece of Mr. Fultz’s artwork as an auction item. Besides his donations of art, he and his wife, Judge Karla Fultz, would make holiday donations to Mentor Iowa as presents to the family. Bill was a mentor to many young aspiring professionals pursuing an advertising career. Mr. Fultz passed away in 2019 but his legacy will live on with his countless pieces of art and corporation logo’s. It is an honor to name the Art category in Mr. Fultz’s name.
Eric “Coop” Cooper – Memorabilia
Eric Cooper was a Major League Baseball umpire and 9-year board member for Mentor Iowa. The highlight of his career was being selected to the umpire crew for the 2014 World Series. Coop joined the board in 2006 and from that moment on he donated many priceless memorabilia pieces to our auction for those to bid on and enjoy. He also is a member of the Hoover High School Hall of Fame. Coop passed away in 2019 but his dedication to his craft lives on through the countless umpires he has mentored through the years. It is an honor to name the Memorabilia category in Mr. Cooper’s name.
Rosemary Graff - Travel
Rosemary Graff was a Juvenile Court officer and the second person to run VIP, now known as Mentor Iowa. Ms. Graff was the Director for VIP starting in 1975 and had to leave in 1994 due to an ever increasing number of children being served by the Juvenile Court. When Rosemary retired from Juvenile Court Services in 2009, she came back to Mentor Iowa to help a new initiative titled the Transition Program and stayed in that role until 2012. Rosemary passed away in 2022 but her memory will live on through something she loved to do which was traveling. Ms. Graff traveled all over the world and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the sights and creating memories with family and friends. It is an honor to name the Travel category in Ms. Graff’s name.
Carl Grant Jr. – Out & About category
Carl Grant Jr. was a mentor, financial supporter and longtime friend to Mentor Iowa. He became a mentor with Mentor Iowa in 2000 to his mentee, Tim. Besides being a mentor, Carl and his wife Marcene, were ongoing sponsors for our auction and holiday parties. Mr. Grant lived life to the fullest and was passionate about tennis, golf, biking, fishing and traveling. His favorite travel spots were trips to Colorado and Hawaii. He always had hist days planned for his adventures or everyday life. Mr. Grant passed away in 2017 but his smile will live on in our memories and we will cherish the many ways of support he provided to Mentor Iowa. It is an honor to name the Out & About category in Mr. Grant’s name.
Kathleen “Sparky” Koenig – Clothing & Accessories
Kathy Koenig was a longtime champion for many organizations, nonprofits and churches throughout her life. Through the combination of her kind heart and talented hands she was able to knit hats and mittens every Christmas for our referred children and their siblings every year. This extremely generous donation helped keep our children safe and warm during our extremely cold winters. Sparky’s daughter, Mindy Toyne, has been a long time champion of Mentor Iowa by being a mentor, board member and was the 2019 Tidrick Honors recipient. Sparky passed away in 2019 but her legacy lives on with her children and grandchildren who continue to give back to Mentor Iowa and our community in many ways. It is an honor to name the Clothing & Accessories category in Mrs. Koenig’s name.
Sue Richardson – Sports & Fitness category
Sue Richardson was a lifelong teacher and relished the opportunity to be a part of young people’s lives with her positive outlook. She loved to exercise by walking and playing tennis. She also enjoyed watching her children play sports and participating in musical events. Her love of giving back to the community was instilled in her children too. Her son, Tyler Brady, hosts an annual golf tournament in his mother’s honor. The TB Invitational in honor of Sue Richardson has raised thousands of dollars for Mentor Iowa and Susan G. Komen Greater Iowa. It is an honor to name the Sports & Fitness category in Ms. Richardson’s name.

We had another great day for the 23rd annual Mentor Iowa auction presented by GreenState Credit Union. All of you are so AWESOME and I can't thank you enough for the amazing bids our items are receiving. A few more items will be added later today, so be sure to check out the auction portal for more packages for you to bid on!
This post is going to celebrate one of our 2026 Mentor of the Year recipients, Andy Johnson. Andy has been a part of Mentor Iowa for 3 years and it is so fun to see him with his mentee, Alex. Andy has so much fun with Alex and both of their smiles are definitely infectious when you see them together. We are so thankful for the many things that Andy does for Mentor Iowa. Whether he is attending a group event with Alex, dropping the first puck at an Iowa Wild game or doing a TV interview, Mentor Iowa knows that Andy will do an amazing job and represent us well. The following is the article which will be featured in our event program.
2026 Mentor of the Year recipient - Andy Johnson
Andy Johnson is a 2026 Mentor of the Year award recipient. Andy has always enjoyed volunteering and when his daughters were younger, he was involved in several activities where he could utilize his talents to help children. Fast forward to 2023 and Andy’s daughters were now grown up, and he found himself with a desire to give back again through volunteering again. A friend of his was already a mentor in the program and introduced Andy to Mentor Iowa. After having an informative conversation with his friend, Andy felt like it was a great fit and soon reached out to the Mentor Iowa office to start the process of becoming a mentor.
Andy passed all the background checks required by Mentor Iowa and soon was at the phase of picking his mentee. He was paired with an awesome kid named Alex and their journey has brought joy to both of them. One of Andy’s favorite memories is helping Alex get involved in his first organized sports league—a flag football team. They ended up spending a lot of time together over several weeks with practices and games. After each one, Andy would ask Alex to rate how much fun he had on a scale of 1 to 10. Alex always responded with an enthusiastic 10 along with a big smile. It is those moments many of us take for granted that were special for Andy to see and be a part of.
Not only has Alex benefitted from having a mentor, but Andy has also benefitted from his mentee. One of the most meaningful parts of this experience for Andy has been seeing how much Alex genuinely appreciates the time we spend together, and the events organized by Mentor Iowa. Alex never takes it for granted and that’s had a big impact on Andy. It’s strengthened his commitment to be a positive influence for Alex. Possibly one of the biggest joys for Andy is to see how Alex has grown as a young man over the 3 years they have been together.
Andy’s advice to prospective mentors is, “I definitely encourage people to explore becoming a mentor with the Mentor Iowa team, even if you can commit just a few hours each month. Mentor Iowa offers great, well-organized events, which makes it easy to get started. As you build a relationship with your mentee, it naturally grows into doing more activities together on your own as well.”
We are so excited to present Andy with his award this Sunday. You can see the award presentation during the live program during our event. The 23rd annual Mentor Iowa auction presented by GreenState Credit Union will be this Sunday, April 26th and will start at 2 pm at Toad Valley Golf Course. The live program is scheduled to start at 4 pm.
Many of you have signed up to place bids, but in case you haven't done so yet, there are two ways you can register for the silent auction. The first way is to simply use the QR Code that is attached to this post. Just place your phone over the QR Code and it will take you directly to the registration page. We are so excited for this Sunday and can't wait to celebrate with all of you.
