Good morning,
On October 7, 2026 at approximately 5:22 PM, Warrior Dispatch received a call from a complainant who stated that a dog had just attacked a child near the 700 block of Hilltop Rd and they had to assist the child in getting away from the dog. One of our officers responded to the area and while responding, a second complainant called and stated that there was a dog running at large and attacking people. It was determined that the dog was a large pitbull type breed belonging to a house nearby. When the officer walked onto the front porch of the residence where the dog resides, the dog began advancing up the stairs towards the officer. With nowhere to retreat to, the officer discharged one round from his handgun which struck the dog. Members of our command staff were notified and responded to the scene as that is common practice anytime an officer discharges a weapon. Multiple witnesses confirmed that the dog had been running at large and attacking people.
We hate that someone lost their pet but we are thankful that the child, our officer, nor anyone else were harmed during the incident.
We try our best to prevent these situations. We have made multiple posts on here encouraging people to be responsible pet owners and abide by the city’s ordinances regarding dogs at large and vicious animals. We also routinely request assistance and patrols from animal control.
Again, we never want things to escalate to these type situations, most of us are dog owners and animal lovers as well. We were sympathetic with the dog owner yesterday evening while at the scene.
Please Warrior citizens, be responsible pet owners and keep your dogs leashed or fenced to help us prevent situations like this.
We are also very thankful to the two gentlemen that assisted the child.
Stay safe and have a great day.
