Our first Slow Down Warwick Demonstration Project has been installed at the corner of Galloway Road and Forester Ave! Did you know that a large portion of Forester Ave beginning at Galloway is 20mph? The speed limit coming into the Village of Warwick on 17A/ Galloway drops significantly from 55mph to 30mph and then rapidly to 20mph both on Galloway (a school zone) and Forester Ave. It’s essential that cars slow down to turn on Forester Ave and slow down significantly coming into the Village.

We are testing out a “neck-down” at the corner of Galloway Rd and Forester Avenue. This is a simple, low cost solution that narrows the wide road to a normal lane width so that drivers are more likely to slow down. This reduced ability to cut the turn going at a high speed will hopefully lead to reduced speeding and improved safety along Forester Ave adjacent to the Park Avenue elementary school, as well as help signal a need to slow down on Galloway.

The cones will be removed after a few days once drivers are used to this new configuration.

The Slow Down Warwick Demonstration Projects are funded through the Safe Streets for All grant from the Federal Highway Administration.

Safer streets start with listening!

We interviewed a cross-section of the community to be sure our Transportation Safety Action Plan is informed by the community’s needs and experiences.

One thing we heard loud and clear: safer streets require visibility, awareness, and infrastructure that works for everyone!

🎨Painting will begin in mid September and we are looking for volunteers to help assist our lead artist Yuke Li to paint four road murals and 1 free-standing mural. No experience is necessary - the process is similar to painting a giant coloring book using brushes and rollers.

If you’re patient and detail-oriented, we’d love to have you join us! Installation is expected to begin in mid September, exact dates to
be announced. Painting will take place only when weather conditions are suitable.

Click on the link in our bio to join the WhatsApp group for volunteers or text Yuke Li at 929-235-3679

The Slow Down Warwick Demonstration Projects are one way we are testing ways to help slow down drivers and raise awareness about safe driving as part of our Transportation Safety Action Plan. We are thrilled to begin implementing these temporary projects on West Street and near Galloway Rd. & Forester Avenue this fall. Check out this link if you want to get involved to help paint these murals!

More about the Artist:

Yuke Li is an artist and illustrator who uses visual language to express emotions, thoughts and stories. Her public art experience spans multiple cities including New York City, San Francisco, and Boston. Her practice often focuses on transportation and pedestrian projects, such as a traffic safety fence installation for biking, a 7,500 square foot busway asphalt mural in Union Square in New York City, and crosswalk artworks. In all her projects, she balances visual impact with safety, using bold, high saturation colors. For Warwick, she drew inspiration from an extensive site visit and tour of the community and from community engagement conducted by fellow artist Elizabeth Laule about how people feel as they navigate around our streets.

More than 200 residents responded to our road safety survey, with nearly 150 identifying speeding as their top concern. Where exactly are residents seeing speeding as a problem? Swipe through to see these areas identified across the Villages of Warwick, Greenwood Lake, and Florida.

These responses, along with an analysis of crashes throughout the Town of Warwick, are helping inform the Transportation Safety Action Plan and guide future safety improvements.

More public meetings are coming this fall. Stay tuned to learn more!

Our Transportation Safety Action Plan starts with listening to our community.

Through surveys, stakeholder interviews, and community meetings, residents shared concerns about speeding, pedestrian and cyclist safety, crosswalks, sidewalks, and visibility.

Now we’re taking that feedback into the next phase to help create safer streets for everyone.

📍Community Spotlight Thursday!

This week, we are highlighting the intersection that connects Colonial Ave with Main St in the Village of Warwick.

This intersection sees traffic coming from multiple directions, making it especially important to stay alert. Drivers turning right onto Colonial Avenue should remember to yield to vehicles already turning left onto Colonial Avenue before proceeding.

Knowing who has the right-of-way and taking a few extra seconds to look twice can help keep Warwick moving safely.

*Please Note: This intersection will be redeveloped in the near future to help improve safety and traffic flow*
