Katugastota Uparatana Nayaka Thero, Chief Judicial Prelate of North America & Chief Incumbent of Maryland Buddhist Vihara.

Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka and Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe visited the Washington D.C. Buddhist Vihara, the first Theravada Buddhist Vihara to be established in the United States of America by Venerable Mahanayaka Madihe Pannasiha Thero and paid their respects to the Most Ven. Maharagama Dhammasiri Nayaka Thero, Chief Prelate of North America and Chief Incumbent of Washington Buddhist Vihara.

Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka and Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe visited the West Virginia Bhavana Society and paid their respects to Ven. Aggamaha Panditha Henepola Gunaratana Thero, Chief Sangha Nayaka Thero for North America and the Chief Incumbent of West Virginia Bhavana Society and foremost international authority on mindfulness and meditation. Venerable Henepola Gunaratana will be 99 years of age in December of this year. Ven. Ethkandawaka Saddhajeewa Thero, Co-Abbot of the Bhavana Society facilitated the visit. The Minister and the Ambassador also had the opportunity of visiting the newly opened museum in the temple premises named after Venerable Henepola Gunaratana and witnessed firsthand the meticulous documentation of the long journey of Venerable Henepola Gunaratana Thero in spreading and propagating the words of wisdom of Lord Buddha internationally and in particular in the United States of America, and his contribution towards propagating mindfulness and meditation. Venerable Bhante Gunaratana has written a large number of books on meditation and mindfulness and the book "Mindfulness in Plain English" is prominent. In the United States of America alone, more than 10 million copies of it have been sold so far, and a recent survey of the New York Times has revealed that it is the world's leading book on Buddhist meditation. The Venerable Henepola Gunaratana presented two signed books of "Mindfulness in Plain English" to the Minister and Ambassador.

On the invitation of Venerable Bhikku Ratnaguna, Chief Prelate of the Hฦฐฦกng ฤแบกo Buddhist Temple in Fort Worth, Texas Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka, and Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe participated at the Vesak ceremony at the Hฦฐฦกng ฤแบกo Vipassanฤ Bhavฤnฤ Center, in Dallas, Texas. This is also the temple of Venerable Pannakara who led the โWalk for Peaceโ in the United State and Sri Lanka recently. Buddha Relics and Bo sapling of Sri Maha Bodhi were brought over from Sri Lanka by Most Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, Ven. Wellagiriye Sumangala Nayaka Thero and Ven. Ambaliyadde Gunarathana Nayaka Thero of Hanguranketha Madanwala Pirivena and Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara as part of the 10-day exposition of the Holy Relics of the Buddha and Bo Sapling of Sri Maha Bodhi for the veneration of the general public at the Hฦฐฦกng ฤแบกo temple. The Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka, on the instructions of H.E. the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, loaned Buddha relics that were brought over by three officers of the Archaeological Department and will be taken back to Sri Lanka after the conclusion of the 10-day exposition. Thousands of devotees are visiting Hฦฐฦกng ฤแบกo temple to worship.
