Today, the Cathedral Choir premieres Pied Beauty, a new work by Bruce Neswick, founding director of the Cathedral Girls Choir.

Commissioned by longtime National Cathedral School music teacher Jill Bixler in memory of her brother, William Sibley, the piece celebrates a meaningful connection to the Girls Choir’s beginnings.

Today marks Cathedral Day and the 119th anniversary of the laying of Washington National Cathedral’s foundation stone.

On September 29, 1907, the first stone was set in place, beginning a building journey that would span generations. This historic photo offers a glimpse back at the Cathedral’s earliest chapter and the vision for a national house of prayer began to take shape.

119 years later, we celebrate all who have helped build, sustain and shape this Cathedral and its ministry.
