Good news — contacting 811 is FREE! There’s no charge for marking public utility lines.

However, if you have private lines (like a sprinkler or invisible fence), you may need to hire a private locator, which could have a fee.

Regardless of the cost, ensuring ALL lines are marked is critical for safe digging. If you have private lines, be sure to enlist the help of a private utility locator in addition to 811 before you begin excavation.

Always be sure to know the "dig safe zone" in your state. Respect the marks, and use hand digging around utilties that may be in conflict!

Planning a dig? Remember to respect the tolerance zone around utility line markings. If you need to dig within this zone, always use hand tools and take extra care. Digging too close to these lines can lead to serious hazards.
