The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national network of local groups of volunteers engaging local communities to strengthen public health, reduce vulnerability, build resilience, and improve preparedness, response and recovery capabilities. There are roughly 800 MRC units and more than 200,000 volunteers across the United States, the District of Columbia, Palau, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico. MRC volunteers consist of various medical and public health professionals, as well as others interested in improving the health and safety of their communities.

When communities face tragedy, trained volunteers are there to listen, support, and help people begin to heal.

At a recent Virginia Behavioral Health (VBH) MRC Statewide Unit meeting, MRC volunteers who were deployed to the shooting at Old Dominion University shared their experiences providing emotional support to students and faculty. Drawing on skills learned through VBH and the Virginia Crisis and Response Team (VCART) training, volunteers used active listening, empathy, and validation to help those affected navigate a difficult time.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of self-care, reflection, and peer support for responders. Thank you to these volunteers for sharing their experiences and helping strengthen behavioral health preparedness across Virginia. https://www.aspr.gov/readiness-response/healthcare-readiness/healthcare-readiness-action/meet-our-mrc-network/mrc-lessons-learned-odu-tragedy

Kansas Medical Reserve Corps unit leaders came together for a one-day workshop, thanks to MRC-STTRONG funding.

The workshop focused on strengthening volunteer engagement, community outreach, preparedness training, and collaboration across the state. Leaders received hands-on training to use stop-the-bleed tools, anti-choke training vests, and manikins to support outreach and recruit new volunteers. Unit leaders also completed Naloxone training, further equipping communities with life-saving skills.

Thanks to MRC-STTRONG funding, Kansas’s Medical Reserve Corps has increased volunteer membership by 98%, expanded outreach and training activities, and strengthened partnerships statewide.
