We inadvertently included an advertisement in the June 2025 issue of The DACOR Bulletin about a Save the Date for our Senior Living Foundation (SLF) Planning for Change event in September. There will be no SLF Planning for Change event this year. The next one is scheduled for 2026. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding.

You can watch past recordings of our previous SLF Planning for Change events at https://www.slfoundation.org/planningforchange.cfm or visit our website for more retirement resources.

Senior Living Foundation This event was held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 in Washington, DC. Thank you to all who were in attendance whether in-person or virtual.

SLF Deputy Director Adrienne Coleman-Seabrooks (left), Executive Director Kyle Longton, and Board Member and Secretary/Treasurer Paula Jakub attended a garden party at DACOR Bacon House on Tuesday, June 10.

The party celebrated the bicentennial of the DACOR Bacon House. Throughout its history, the House was home to Supreme Court Justices and Clerks of the Court, a Congressman, and one of the grand dames of Washington society in the 20th century. In the 1980s, the House became home to DACOR and has served as a meeting place for the foreign affairs community ever since.

Since the founding of SLF, the Foundation and DACOR have collaborated to support the retired Foreign Service community.

The Senior Living Foundation's board of directors and staff mourn the loss of long-time Board member William “Bill” Harrop. Ambassador Harrop passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Following service in the Marine Corps during the Korean War, Bill took and passed the Foreign Service exam. His first posting to Palermo, Italy, in 1954, was the start of a nearly four-decade career at State, taking him and his family around the world. Among other assignments, Bill served as DCM in Canberra, Ambassador to Guinea, Ambassador to Kenya, Ambassador to Seychelles, Ambassador to Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), and Ambassador to Israel. His assignments in Washington included time in Personnel, service on the Policy Planning Council, work in the Bureau of African Affairs, and nearly three years as the Inspector General.

Ambassador Harrop was active in the American Foreign Service Association throughout his career and into retirement, serving as the organization's Chairman from 1972 to 1974. AFSA awarded him the 2015 Lifetime Contributions to American Diplomacy Award. Among other organizations, he was also a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and was active in successfully establishing the National Museum of American Diplomacy.

Over the course of more than 20 years, Ambassador Harrop provided guidance to the Senior Living Foundation. He was a passionate advocate for supporting the Foreign Service community. In addition to his Board service, he shared his own experience with downsizing and moving later in life at the 2014 Senior Living Foundation Planning for Change event to help others understand their options. He will be greatly missed.
