CASA Statement on the 109th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

WASHINGTON, DC — As the Congressional Armenian Staff Association (CASA) marks the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the organization’s executive board issued the following statement:

“As descendants of survivors of the Armenian Genocide, we, the leadership of the Congressional Armenian Staff Association, join Armenian-Americans around the country to commemorate the 109th anniversary of the genocide committed against Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians by the Ottoman Turks.

“Just over a century ago, 1.5 million Armenians were systematically exterminated by the Ottoman Empire. Families were torn apart, villages destroyed, and in the decades that have followed there has been a systematic attempt to deny and outright erase the Armenian cultural heritage in that region.

“Congress and President Biden have both acknowledged this, but the world is still reckoning with the consequences of Turkey’s failure to come to terms with its history. Last year, the indigenous Armenians of Artsakh were ethnically cleansed from their homeland leaving the Republic of Armenia as the focus of Turkey’s and Azerbaijan’s existential threat.

“One of our greatest strengths is the fortitude and determination passed down from our parents and grandparents, many of whom were survivors of the Armenian Genocide. Even when faced with what seem to be overwhelming odds we persevere.

“The descendants of genocide survivors are now part of the conscience and beating heart of Congress and will do their utmost to stand against injustice and create a better future.”
