Finland’s shelters are gaining global recognition for their innovative approach to civil preparedness.

Around 800 foreign delegations have visited the Merihaka civil shelter, one of the largest among Finland’s 50,500 shelters. Built underground and currently operating as a sports and recreation complex—with a children’s playground, gym, and other facilities—the space can be rapidly converted in an emergency to accommodate up to 6,000 people.

With decades of experience, Finnish companies have developed world-leading expertise in the construction and maintenance of civil shelters, including radiation-protected doors, ventilation systems, communications infrastructure, and other critical technologies.

As the global security environment becomes increasingly uncertain, countries are investing more in preparedness and resilience. Finland has valuable expertise and practical solutions to share.

Journeying from 5G to 6G! 💡

Together with the U.S. Department of War’s FutureG Office and George Mason University, the Embassy of Finland hosted a symposium about the opportunities and challenges in developing and enabling ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communication) capabilities.

Held in connection with the International ISAC Innovation Forum, the evening reception brought together government representatives, innovators, and thought leaders to exchange views on the future of secure connectivity. The event was opened by Ambassador Leena-Kaisa Mikkola with keynote remarks by Petri Peltonen, Under Secretary of State at Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.

As a global leader in digital connectivity, Finland is at the forefront of advancing network capabilities from AI-enabled 5G to AI-native 6G. Finnish-U.S. collaboration will enable the development of innovative and reliable communications solutions.

Travel to Finland and the EU is changing later this year! 🇫🇮🌍

Starting in October, U.S. citizens will need to obtain ETIAS travel authorization—which can be done easily online.

Dual citizens of an EU country and a non-EU country will need to have an EU passport to enter the Schengen Area.
