The migrant is the political figure of our time. According to the UNHCR, the world is currently experiencing more human displacement and migration than after WWI. The number of international migrants (persons living in a country other than their country of birth) reached 244 million in 2015, a 41% increase in the past decade. According to the most recent UN dataset, (‘Trends in International Migrant Stock: the 2015 Revision’) , international migrants have increased faster than the world’s population. At one level, the history of the world is the history of movement, from the earliest hunter-gatherer nomadic groupings to the mass migration and immigration patterns of the 21st century. However, at no time in human history has movement been more strictly and, increasingly, violently controlled.
