With the World Cup starting next week, here's a question for actuaries: how do you know if you're offside?

In soccer, offside is determined not when you receive the ball, but when it is passed. Your position—and the position of players on the opposing team—at that instant is what counts.

The same logic can apply when taking on actuarial work. Under the Code of Professional Conduct, you must be qualified for an assignment before you accept it. You can't expect to "play into form" or get qualified as you go.

In the latest "Up to Code" column in our May/June issue of Contingencies, author Eli Greenblum takes a look at how actuaries can make sure they are qualified and remain onside.
