On Friday, I participated in the investiture ceremony of Tony Mattivi as a Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas. As a federal prosecutor for more than 20 years, and most recently as Director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Judge Mattivi has a long history of upholding the rule of law and keeping Kansans safe. I was pleased to urge the White House to nominate him for the federal bench, as well as introduce him during his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Judge Mattivi cares deeply about Kansas, and I am confident that he will perform the duties of this role exceptionally well. Congratulations to Judge Mattivi, his wife, Mary, and their family.

GOOD NEWS: Wichita Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) has been selected for a $1 million grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program.

I was pleased to advocate for Wichita to receive this funding, which will expand access to reliable, efficient air service to a new major hub, strengthening Wichita’s connections to key economic centers. This service will benefit travelers and create new opportunities for Kansas businesses, educational institutions and communities. I look forward to continuing to work with the Wichita Airport Authority and local leaders to strengthen access to key transportation for Kansans.

It was great to participate in the ribbon cutting of the
Kansas State University Western Star Global Grain and Food Center on Friday. This new facility will play a critical role in supporting ag research, innovation, education and the future of our nation’s food and ag industries. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, I worked to secure more than $5M to bolster K-State’s efforts to train the next generation of agriculture and food industry leaders.

Thank you to K-State President Richard Linton, College of Agriculture Dean Dan Moser, former College of Agriculture Dean Ernie Minton and all the K-State staff and faculty for hosting me and for their leadership in making this new facility a reality.

Great news for Kansas agriculture: today, Kansas State University will cut the ribbon on the new Western Star Global Grain and Food Center. This state-of-the-art facility will help prepare students to become leaders in agriculture and equip them to tackle challenges facing ag producers in Kansas and across the globe.

This week, I met with this year’s Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Leadership KFB class. I enjoyed learning more about their experience in the program, which helps build up influential and thought-driven leaders in agriculture and rural communities. I appreciate their commitment to supporting rural Kansas communities and the agricultural industry.

Thank you to Leadership KFB class members Andrea DeJesus of Manhattan, Caleb Barger of Hoyt, Stacy Wurtz of Randolph, Hallie Means of Tribune, Kali Kootz of Ellsworth and Savannah Nichols of Minneapolis for taking the time to meet with me. Thank you also to KFB staff Myndi Krafft, Stephanie Gfeller, Joel Leftwich, Terry Holdren and Ryan Flickner for their investment in emerging leaders in Kansas agriculture.

PASSED: The Farm Bill has advanced out of the Senate Agriculture Committee, securing important priorities for Kansas farmers and ranchers, including year-round E-15, modernized farm loan limits, strengthened conservation programs, expanded trade promotion and the permanent transfer of Food for Peace to USDA.

This is a critical step toward advancing a Farm Bill that provides certainty and support for farmers, ranchers and rural communities in Kansas and across the nation. When farmers and ranchers succeed, rural America succeeds. I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move this legislation across the finish line and to the President’s desk to be signed into law.

GOOD NEWS: The Runway SAFE-T Act has passed the Senate Commerce Committee. After recent runway incidents, I introduced this legislation with Senator John Hickenlooper to strengthen airport surface safety, improve training and technology for ground vehicle operators and prevent future incidents. I look forward to supporting this bill on the floor of the full Senate.

GOOD NEWS: 14 rural health care providers in Kansas are receiving federal investments through the latest round of Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) funding. This $16 million investment will help strengthen care for Kansans in rural communities and improve access to high-quality, affordable services close to home.

I worked with my colleagues to establish this program last year, and I will continue working with rural health care providers and state leaders to improve access to care for Kansans and strengthen rural providers.
