Today, our nation mourns the loss of a giant. Rest in power to civil rights legend Rev. Jesse Jackson (1941–2026). 🕊️
For more than half a century, Rev. Jackson was a tireless servant leader who fought for the oppressed, the voiceless, and the marginalized across the globe. But for the residents of Washington, D.C., he held a uniquely special and historic role.
In 1991, Rev. Jackson became the District of Columbia’s very first “Shadow Senator.” During his six-year tenure, he used his immense national platform to spotlight a glaring injustice right in America’s backyard: the disenfranchisement of hundreds of thousands of tax-paying Americans living in the capital.
He was an uncompromising champion for D.C. Statehood. Rev. Jackson marched, lobbied, and spoke passionately for the cause, demanding that the promise of democracy apply to everyone. He always believed that D.C. residents deserved a true, voting voice in the halls of Congress.
He once said that his life’s mission was to “tear down walls and open up holes so others behind you can run through.” He opened countless doors for equality and representation. Let us honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.
Keep Hope Alive. 🌟
